The Center for Workforce Inclusion is recruiting for a Kaibab Silviculture Mentor in the Southwest Region 3 Kaibab Nation Forest in Fredonia, AZ within the NFS Agriculture Conservation Experienced Services (ACES) Program through a grant administered program which provides support to the U.S. Forest Service (NFS). Successful candidates must meet the age criteria of being 55 years of age or older and eligible to work in the United States. Selected candidates will also be required to undergo a federal security background check.

Role and Responsibilities: Provide mentoring and coaching to Foresters or Silviculture Trainees in the development, planning, and application of silvicultural methods and practices. Provide support and mentoring for the regional reforestation program.

Duties include:

  • Provides support and mentoring for all phases of reforestation, including but not limited to cone surveys, cone collection, site assessment, site prep, seeding, planting, and survival surveys. This work is at the forest and across the Region.
  • Supports forester or Silviculture Trainees in making on-the-ground examinations and analyses of forest areas to determine which areas require short- or long-range cultural treatment to achieve management objectives.
  • Reviews silviculture prescriptions to ensure that plans, treatment, and harvesting techniques are compatible with long-range land management plans.
  • Helps forester or Silviculture Trainees evaluate project areas for timber stand improvement, draft prescription treatments, prepare contract actions, and administer contract.
  • Provides assistance and training in stand inventory, including Common Stand Exam protocols and forest sampling.
  • Assist Foresters and Silviculture trainees with mastering Forest Service applications: FVS, FSVeg, FACTS

Qualifications and Education Requirements: Successful candidates must meet the age criteria of being 55 years of age or older and eligible to work in the United States; able to pass a Federal Background check; BA/BS; minimum of 20 yrs relevant experience in related field; Knowledge of professional forestry land management principles, practices, and concepts sufficient to perform a full range of duties in the development and implementation of silvicultural land management treatments. Knowledge of silvics, dendrology, reforestation methods, timber stand improvement principles and techniques, and harvest systems; familiarity with related fields such as wildlife, landscape architecture, plant genetics, hydrology, and soil science sufficient to develop silvicultural prescriptions which provide solutions to complex problems covering an array of environmental objectives. Knowledge of the interrelationship of physical factors (including climate characteristics such as temperature, precipitation, and movement and composition of the air, and soil conditions such as texture, structure and depth, moisture capacity and drainage, and nutrient content) and biological planting and seeding programs, including the inventory of plantable areas. Knowledge of Agency policies and procedures sufficient to ensure that silvicultural plans and programs are consistent with such policies and procedures Specialized in Recreation Planning and Management. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), Field Sampled Vegetation (FSVEG), Forest Service Activity Tracking System (FACTS). The position may require travel to other forest in the Region to assist with Reforestation. Working at computer, driving, walking in field in all kinds of terrain. Must be able to use chainsaw in woods.

Hours & Compensation: Part-Time position working 29 hours per week @ $50.00 hours per week.
