Scope of Work:

The purpose of this position is to apply theory and principles of engineering in overseeing construction and maintenance of structures and facilities under construction, repair, or renovation at the United States Air Force Academy.

Responsibilities:

  • Incumbent is responsible for all phases of construction oversight and inspection, reporting, review of design documents, as-built drawings and contractor submittals.
  • Inspect and oversee construction work to ensure that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
  • Observe work in progress to ensure that procedures followed and materials used conform to specifications.
  • Examine quality of finished installations for conformity to standard and approve installation.
  • Interpret blueprints and specifications for contractor (construction) and resolves deviations from specified construction procedures to ensure compliance with regulations governing construction.
  • Inspect construction to determine soundness and compliance with specifications, building codes, and other regulations.
  • Inspections may be general in nature or may be limited to a specific discipline, such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC Systems.
  • Maintain daily log of construction and inspection activities and compare progress reports.
  • Interface with design engineers on problem resolution, developing government estimates for contract change modifications and providing technical support as needed.
  • Approve and sign contractor submittals that meet required specifications.
  • Coordinate utility and road outages with appropriate agencies.
  • Provide superior customer service and construction updates throughout construction period.
  • Compute monthly estimates of work completed and approve payment for contractors.
  • Records quantities of materials received or used during specified periods.
  • Prepare sketches of construction installations that deviate from blueprints and reports such changes for incorporation on master blueprints.
  • Evaluate premises for cleanliness, including garbage disposal and lack of vermin infestation.
  • Ensure contractor maintains safe working environment and minimizes construction debris.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ of specialized experience as a construction inspector gaining the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties as identified above.
  • One (1) year experience in residential, industrial, and/or commercial building inspections or design.
  • HS Diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree preferred.
  • Vocational/technical training desired.
  • Knowledge of office automation software (MS Windows, MS Office, including PowerPoint, Word, Access, and Excel) required.
  • Ability to collect, analyze and interpret technical data.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (Tier 1) background check.
  • Must maintain licenses and/or credentials required for this position.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.
  • Must possess the ability to interact well with others in a team setting ability or alone and be able to change jobs on short notice.
  • Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
  • Highly motivated, flexible organized and must be detail oriented.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to maintain ability to access government worksite.
  • Must have practical knowledge of worksite safety, occupational hazards, and standard safety practices.
  • Must be able to perform duties under adverse weather conditions (extreme cold / heat, etc.). Outside work in winter, summer, rain, sleet, and snow and on uneven terrain – side hills and slopes.
  • Must be able to climb ladders up to 40 feet and lift/carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Work may require exposure to dust, particulates, unpleasant and potentially hazardous substances, and high voltage.
  • Must be able to work alternate and extended shift schedules when necessary to meet the customer's mission requirements, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to perform on-call duties when necessary and report to work within the required timeframe from notification. 
  • Must have and maintain a valid state driver’s license to operate a company vehicle.
  • Must have a safe driving record, as defined by Company policy, to operate a company vehicle.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a drug/alcohol test and a criminal record check.
