Position Summary

This is a seasonal position with the Attleboro YMCA, a leading non-profit organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Sports Specialist is responsible for developing and delivering a diverse and engaging curriculum that encourages campers of all abilities to have fun and work together as a team while engaging in physical activity.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintains safety of all camper athletes while participating in specialty sports programs.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, nurturing, and engaging environment for campers.
  • Maintain a face-count of campers under your supervision at all times.
  • Promote the unique talents and diverse abilities of campers by establishing a welcoming environment.
  • Facilitate and actively engage in games, activities, and events with campers with a focus on good sportsmanship.
  • Monitor interactions between campers to ensure healthy dialogue and offer guidance on conflict resolution as needed.
  • Create a sense of belonging for campers through shared experiences and teambuilding activities.
  • Attend all mandatory YMCA staff meetings, team meetings and staff trainings.
  • Abide by all camp and YMCA policies & procedures.
  • Actively promote camp and the Attleboro YMCA.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized program space, is punctual, arriving ready to run a sports program with ideas and equipment needed.
  • Assist the Camp Director, Assistant Director, and Program Coordinator with identifying and planning theme days and planning corresponding STEM activities.
  • Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  • Remains calm, professional and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  • Maintain positive rapport and open communication with staff, campers, and parents/guardians.
  • Promote and participate in all theme activities with enthusiasm.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Prior experience working with children in a day camp setting
  • Must be certified in CPR and First Aid
  • Ability to stay calm and respond effectively in an emergency
  • Quick and effective decision-making skills and strong communication skills
  • A positive, friendly attitude and strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to communicate accurate information in a timely manner
  • A high level of maturity and responsibility
    • Must maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time and in extreme weather conditions
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling and walking
  • Ability to speak concisely and communicate effectively
  • Maintain high-level of physical and mental readiness
