Cornell College invites applications for a part-time nurse. The nurse provides primary health care for students through a comprehensive approach to health and wellbeing. The nurse provides professional expertise in history-taking, triage, providing referrals, laboratory skills, data collection, clinical assessment, technical procedures, and travel health. The position is scheduled for 20 hours per week for ~ 8 months per year.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs duties including:
    • tabulation of daily and annual clinical statistics; maintenance of medical records
    • establishment and maintenance of nursing protocols
    • oversight of quality assurance activities, security and confidentiality procedures, and compliance with regulatory commissions (ie OSHA and CLIA)
  • Assess, treat, and refer acute illnesses and chronic illnesses within the scope of the Iowa Nurse Practice Act.
  • Perform nursing functions such as health histories, physical assessment, STI testing and treatment, vital signs, lab tests, immunizations, suture removal, patient education, contraception education and provision of emergency contraception, with appropriate documentation.
  • Review medical records of all incoming students, following up on incomplete records and health concerns. Work with the Registrar’s Office and Dean of Students to enforce immunization requirements and obtain missing data.
  • Maintains and updates epidemiologic statistics, reports communicable diseases to the appropriate authority.
  • Makes counseling referrals as appropriate.
  • Maintains CPR and AED instructor certification every two years.
  • Provides travel information and immunization information to students traveling abroad. Consults with supervising physician for antimalarials and oral typhoid vaccine
  • Provides international students with tuberculosis information and testing, and follows up with medical care as needed.
  • Acts as first response team for New Student Convocation, Baccalaureate, and Commencement ceremonies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

RN or advanced license from the Iowa Board of Nursing and Associates degree in Nursing is required. One to three years of experience in an ambulatory care setting, community health nursing, or school health.

Skills in physical assessment and nursing diagnosis, first aid and emergency care procedures, clinical technical procedures, problem-solving, and time management; knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, medication, health promotion and illness prevention, behavioral science, research utilization and epidemiology and infectious disease; ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with others in a professional environment, to self-regulate and work independently; ability to maintain confidentiality, prioritize and organize work and make sound decisions regarding students' health care; ability to perform fine finger movements, hear and see. Computer skills needed: Word, Excel, website maintenance, basic database utilization. Routine vaccines required.

Working Location & Conditions

The hiring pay range for the position is $30- $43 per hour. This position is part-time and not eligible for the college's benefits package. Work is performed in a pleasant clinic environment.
