In alignment with CPS/ISBE, our school strives to provide high quality and specially designed instructional supports and services for all students with disabilities within the least restrictive environment. We work collaboratively with the goal of improving the academic achievement of all students with disabilities by ensuring they receive meaningful and relevant access to grade level core instruction within the school. Teachers provide appropriate, effective, and culturally relevant instruction for grades 9-12 aligned to SAT, AVID College Readiness, and state standards. IHSCA ensures that students are provided a safe learning environment that supports student social-emotional growth as well as academics.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Paraprofessional reports to the Principal and works with the Case Managers and Special Education Teachers to provide supplementary services to students. Under the direction of a teacher, the Paraprofessional assists teacher in providing a positive classroom experience by providing behavioral management, assisting with students’ personal care needs (mobility, bathroom, etc.), providing supervision on field trips and class activities, and helping to facilitate communication with students with special needs who are also English language learners.
- Assist in implementing students’ individual education plans
- Aid general curriculum teachers in carrying out classroom activities
- Utilize behavioral management strategies under the direction of a teacher
- Provide feedback to the teacher about effectiveness of accommodations made to students
- Assist in preparing educational materials
- Aid students in utilizing technology at school
- Observe students and share information about their behavior outside of the classroom
- Assist teachers in gathering documentation such as assessment data, work samples, observations, and reports from general education teachers
- Work with students of a variety of different learning styles
- Assist with daily living skills (toileting, feeding and dressing)
- Assist in classroom management
- Provide support to students in a library or media center
- Associate’s degree
- Approved paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (preferred)
- Two years of experience working with students in a secondary school setting (preferred)
- Highly ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies associated with the school
- Ability to assist students during academic or non-academic activities as indicated in an individualized educational plan
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality
- Ability to create appropriate learning material
- Strong commitment to building a true-collegial community with students, families, partners, staff, and teachers at each level
- Ability to identify and take preventative measures against distressing situations in which students may be involved
- Ability to respond to emergency situations while maintaining composure
- Ability to manage small and large group activities
- Dependability and punctuality
- Experience in utilizing behavioral interventions
- Ability to learn to operate equipment and devices that students may use
- Familiarity with Boardmaker Plus and/or Boardmaker Studio preferred
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality
- Ability and desire to advocate for students’ rights and quality education
- Ability to procure social opportunities for students: field trips, school activities, school responsibilities, etc.
- Ability to act both as a team player and an individual with minimal supervision
- Exceptional organization and time management skills
- Above average “customer” service attitude
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, bilingual English/Spanish preferred
- Ability to maintain composure under pressure
- Dependability and punctuality
- Ability to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, manage conflict and challenges
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Approximately 50% of time spent standing as well as some lifting (under 30 lbs.)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours; non-traditional hours may also be required to perform job duties. Attendance at organization sponsored events is also required.
