What We Are Seeking: A Principal Investigator (PI) to act as a staff representative of Chickaloon Village Traditional Council’s (CVTC) Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) liaising with Federal, State, public, and other contracting agencies. You will be trained in archaeological policies, practices, and safety protocols for performing monitoring work on construction sites that have a high likelihood of detecting relevant cultural deposits. You will likely be assigned to construction projects in highly sensitive areas and may encounter buried artifacts, features, and potentially ancestral remains.


Additional Responsibilities: You will document daily activities and findings and perform as the onsite supervisor of CVTC’s Archeological Field Technicians and Technical Monitors.


Qualifications, Education & Experience: 

  • Must have a Master’s degree in Anthropology and/or related degree and at least one season of experience in archaeological field monitoring, excavation, and/or survey work (preferably in Alaska).
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and leadership skills; including the ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds; establish and maintain cooperative relationships and work successfully as a member of a team.
  • Experience with basic field equipment such as shovels, trowels, personal computers, and various electronics such as GPS devices and walkie talkies.
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to function well under pressure in a fast-paced environment in adverse weather conditions.
  • Prolonged periods of standing; occasional lifting and/or moving at least 50 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven terrain, be able to reliably arrive and remain on the job site on the contractor’s demand schedule.

 

Certificates and Licenses Required: A valid Alaska Driver’s license is required for this position and the ability to be insured on CVTC’s vehicle insurance policy.

 

Drug Test and Background Check: This position is subject to pre-hire drug testing. This position requires you to complete and pass a pre-employment state and federal background check as a condition of employment.

 

AN/AI Preference: As allowed in P.L. 93-638, preference for employment will be given to Alaska Native and American Indian peoples.
