Job DescriptionJob DescriptionPRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES


The entry-level position on a towing vessel is called a Deckhand on Inland towboats, an ordinary seaman on coastal tugboats. These crewmembers prepare barges for loading and unloading cargo, build tows, and perform basic vessel maintenance and housekeeping duties that include grinding painted surfaces and painting, removing sea growth, mopping and general cleaning. They may also be asked to assist with engine repairs and have to know how to use mechanics tools.

The Deckhand will handle, pull, throw and tie heavy large diameter (2) lines and cables to tie up the vessel or barge that they are working on as well as carry steamboat ratchets and chain. They will also have to carry dewatering pumps and hoses.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES


The Deckhand will have to know basic firefighting skills and basic lifesaving and rescue techniques.
They should be familiar with the water and able to swim.




KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS


The Deckhand will need to possess the Maritime credentials provided by the U.S Coast Guard, TWIC and be in good physical condition.





WORKING CONDITIONS


The Deckhand generally works 8-12 hour days and is required to live on the vessel while on duty.
The vessel can be loud and the conditions can be extreme cold to extreme heat. They should be familiar with and be willing to use personal protective clothing/equipment such as a lifejacket.

This is an hourly paid position with most nights home. You must live in the local surrounding area
