Job Description

General Summary: Outpatient PRN Dietitian

Under general supervision independently provides medical nutrition therapy via individual and/or group counseling to adult outpatients in a variety of settings, which may include general health/wellness, pre/post-bariatric surgery, CKD, pre/post-transplant, active oncology treatment and long-term survivorship. Independently performs the nutrition care process, including nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation, specific to age and medical status. Partners with team to develop an interdisciplinary nutrition plan of care.  Experience with outpatient counseling, motivational interviewing preferred. Position may require virtual counseling as well as travel to off-site clinics.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Uses own knowledge and skills to identify and re-evaluate nutrition risk throughout patients stay; independently performs the nutrition care process, including assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation, specific to age and medical status., In collaboration with team, develops an interdisciplinary nutrition plan of care for complex patients at high risk, within a specialty population. Modifies plan of care according to own professional knowledge.
  • Discusses plan of nutrition care with patient/and or family (i.e.: nutrition support, chronic kidney disease education, etc.); provides nutrition education as indicated; electronically documents nutrition plan of care and education provided.
  • Collaborates with outpatient dietitian team, as well as outside dietitians and vendors, to facilitate smooth transitions and continuity of care for patients upon hospital discharge.
  • Demonstrates continuous professional growth by staying current with the field of clinical nutrition and then integrating new information into departmental practice.

May lead Community outreach initiatives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics or related field required.
  • Registration by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR) required. Current licensure in the state of Maryland as a Dietitian/Nutritionist required.
  • Four (4) years clinical experience preferred as a Registered Dietitian at a hospital facility, including completion of UMMC initial review required.
  • Prior completion of a Specialty Fellowship Program or Active Specialty Certification: CNSC, CDE, CSR, CSP, CSO, IBCLC is preferred. Maintenance of 30 CEUs/2 years (20 CEU in a specialty area every two years) is required.
  • Current on all mandatory classes/training Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology as they relate to nutrition is required to make clinical decisions regarding a patient’s nutritional care plan.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively communicate with patients and in making recommendations to physicians and other allied health professionals related to the patient’s plan of nutrition care.
  • Demonstrated evidence of professional growth and development through: enrollment in degree program, teaching in formal hospital programs or outside of hospital.
  • Ability to establishes and maintain courteous and effective relationships that foster quality customer service, demonstrates sensitivity and awareness of customer needs when dealing with patients/visitors, co-workers and healthcare staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and use an online computer system to enter and manage patient information.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, work independently and as part of a team, ability to lead a small project team, plan and organize schedules and have effective time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and apply the procedures, practices, policies and fundamental concepts in the assigned unit/division; and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide nutrition care appropriate to the age of the patients served for given service. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
