Evening hours 2pm-10pm or 3pm-11pm

The Accessioner reports to the Laboratory Supervisor and is responsible for receiving and accessioning surgical specimens and urine specimens into the Anatomic Pathology or Clinical Pathology computer system.
This position handles the start of all laboratory work that comes through the IMP lab. This person is responsible for sorting samples based on insurance and case type, sending out samples we do not accept, and accessioning all patient samples we can accept in house in a timely manner to ensure they can be processed as soon as that night.
This position also takes care of customer service work during the afternoon before the samples arrive from offices. This work includes patient generated slide requests for outside consults, packing of genomic testing for send out, and maintains logs for chain of custody for all samples that leave the laboratory.
This position also covers clerical work during their downtime such as answering phone calls from offices, filing paperwork, and filing slides.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Receives and logs specimens into the AP/CP computer system.
  • Assesses quality and appropriateness of specimens received and takes appropriate action, under the guidance of the laboratory Supervisor.
  • Maintains neat, organized and legible written records.
  • Maintains a clean organized work area.
  • Maintains appropriate supply inventory at assigned area.
  • Participates in in-service training as required.
  • Prioritizes and reorganizes workload in response to emergency procedures.
  • Adheres to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in work schedule to include weekends and holidays.
  • Demonstrates professionalism as evidenced by the cooperative attitude of peers and associated staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to our mission and Customer Service by adhering to all facets of the Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Performs other position related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES

Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with physicians and other clinical personnel when gathering and exchanging specimen related information.
  • Analytical skills necessary to ascertain physician needs.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when mixing solutions and reagents, embedding and cutting tissues.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact professionally and courteously with management and other personnel. Must be able to communicate effectively by telephone, e-mail and in person with customers, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Complies with all health and safety policies of the organization.
  • Complies with HR confidentiality standards.
Accessioning experience preferred. Flexible in the hours, as long as work is completed at night. Must be organized, responsible for keeping many logs and records of samples. Must have a car, occasionally will need to drive to off-site storage down the block to obtain patient materials.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum 1 year previous Lab experience.
