Position Summary:
To provide effective and efficient maintenance and repair on transportation and line-related equipment. Apprentice to be closely supervised by Mechanic II or Transportation Supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform periodic maintenance on vehicles and related equipment to ensure safe operations and extended service of equipment.
- Inventory and maintain a reasonable inventory of parts to ensure prompt repair and reduce down time of equipment.
- Maintain computerized database of vehicle maintenance, repair activities, and parts used in work activities to ensure accurate records are kept.
- Perform daily inspections and Department of Transportation inspections, as required, on all vehicles, trailers, and other equipment to ensure they are safe and road worthy.
- Maintain shop area in a neat and orderly fashion to ensure a safe work environment.
- In addition to these responsibilities, may be assigned by the Transportation Supervisor to perform other duties from time to time.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalency is required. Graduation from a vocational/technical school or job-related experience, with specific training in general gasoline and diesel mechanics, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and welding experience is preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of one year of experience as a mechanic is preferred.
Job Knowledge:
Must have knowledge of operations and repairs of gasoline engines, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems. Must have knowledge of the proper and safe use of tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair work.
Abilities and Skills:
- Must possess a valid Texas CDL license with good driving record, or be able to obtain within 120 days.
- Must be able to communicate in English, both in written and oral forms with the general public and co-workers.
- Must be able to operate equipment including bucket trucks, digger trucks, and other related equipment.
- Must be able to accurately enter information into a computer.
- Must be able to lift/move 50 pounds or more, as necessary without external assistance of personnel or mechanical aids.
- Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time, sometimes in uneven terrain.
- Must be able to frequently climb, balance, bend, twist, push, pull, kneel, crawl, and work in awkward positions to service equipment.
- Must be able to effectively utilize a two-way radio to communicate duties and location.
- Must have sight to be able to see working conditions from a safety standpoint.
- Must be able to work with deadlines.
Working Environment:
The majority of the work schedule will be performed in a shop/garage and occasionally working at various locations within the service territory each day. The individual must be willing to work in all adverse and inclement weather conditions. The position requires the individual to perform repetitive motions and possess manual dexterity for the completion of duties. This position requires exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. The individual must be able to use a computer. Overtime may be required during times of heavy workload.
