THE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CONDUCTING PUBLIC WORKS ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS, INCLUDING OPERATING CITY EQUIPMENT AND PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON PUBLIC FACILITIES, PROPERTIES, PARKS, AND/OR ROADWAYS AND EASEMENTS. THE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR TASKS INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO OPERATING LIGHT TO MODERATE EQUIPMENT (E.G. LAWNMOWERS, ZERO-TURN MOWERS, TRUCKS, UTILITY TRAILERS, AND OTHER POWER AND HAND TOOLS), MAKING REPAIRS AND MAINTAINING CITY FACILITIES, PROPERTIES, ROADS, AND EASEMENTS, COMPLETING PLANNED MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES, AND OTHER RELATED DUTIES AS ASSIGNED. THE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR IS EXPECTED TO EXERCISE CONSIDERABLE TECHNICAL SKILL AND ABILITY AS WELL AS INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT AND KNOWLEDGE IN THE PERFORMANCE OF DAILY ASSIGNMENTS.

 

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Operates light to moderately heavy or complex equipment such as a zero-turn mower, trucks, utility trailers, street sweepers, power and hand tools, etc.
• Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including but not limited to building structures, erecting fixtures, pavement cutting, ditch digging, laying, and backfilling.
• Performs required maintenance tasks on public facilities, parks, easements, and roadways, including but not limited to conducting basic repairs and/or conducting planned maintenance activities.
• Conducts routine maintenance and cleaning of public areas and roadways, including but not limited to mowing grassy areas, patching and filling holes, power washing sidewalks and buildings, and cleaning and maintaining the Public Works yard and warehouse.
• Makes minor repairs to equipment and reports major maintenance or repair problems to direct supervisor.
• Prepares for work by servicing needed equipment with water, oil, gas, and lubricating moving parts.
• Inspects visible working parts to observe wear and replace faulty parts to prevent breakdown.
• Operates heavier or more complex machinery when required.
• Inspects, organizes, and inventories operating supplies and equipment to see that hand tools such as shovels, forks, rakes, hoses, and other needed equipment are available for use in assigned duties.
• Operates trucks including loading, transporting, and unloading various types of equipment, supplies, materials, and/or machinery.
• Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
• Perform other related job duties as assigned.

 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Experience in working with various types of equipment including generators, backhoes, dump trucks, motor graders, asphalt rollers, and hand & power tools.
• High School diploma or G.E.D.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License, Class “C” with an acceptable driving record.

 

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
• Knowledge of safety regulations to work with equipment used in public works activities.
• Ability to understand and follow detailed written or verbal instructions.
• Best practices for operating and maintaining light to moderately heavy equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operations and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others.
• Ability to correctly prioritize workload.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
• Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
• Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent walking, climbing ladders and scaffolding; grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; driving.
• Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (100 pounds) occasionally.
• Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; confined spaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, and vibration; work around moving objects or vehicles; insects, rodents, may work alone, regular exposure to high, fast-moving mechanical parts.
• Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, occasional prolonged or irregular hours.
• Other: All essential positions are subject to recall during emergencies.
