Job Summary:

The MOHS tissue processing technician will perform various tasks regarding receiving, processing and preparing frozen specimens for microscopic examination and analysis. Must be able to work independently and efficiently.  Must also be able to work collaboratively when needed with members of the clinical and pathology teams.


Requirements:

Must have experience as a MOHS tissue processing technician.  Or a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience working in a histology lab.

 

Job duties and functions:

  • Works under the direction of the Physician while following established procedures for collecting biological specimens for analysis.
  • Performs frozen sections of surgical tissue for microscopic examination by the MOHS surgeon.
  • Verifies specimen validity, identification and requisition.
  • Maintains all documentation for CLIA
  • Able to prioritize workload to ensure that patient care remains in the forefront at all times.
  • Able to assist the surgical team as needed throughout the day by providing patient care to our MOHS patients as needed.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility and recognizes the need for cost containment by following practices that minimize waste.
  • Maintains excellent work relationships with staff, providers and management. Is accountable for his/her actions or mistakes and takes a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Adheres to department policy, and to CLIA, HIPAA and OSHA regulations at all times specifically with waste disposal and specimen integrity practices.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Compliance with all CLIA regulations regarding quality control and lab standards.
  • RMA, CNA, RN, LPN or a Bachelor's degree in a medical related field.
  • Knowledge of internal laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Excellent command of medical terminology.
  • Excellent command of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Willing to learn new computer programs and applications.
  • Willing to cross train in other areas as needed.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, and managers across all West Michigan Dermatology sites.

This is a laboratory setting therefore, there is risk of exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, blood borne pathogens, and sharps instruments.
