The Project: The project site is the U.S. Army Garrison Hospital, located on the atolls of Kwajalein and Roi-Namur in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, a scenic chain of Islands equidistant from Hawaii, Australia, and the Philippines. It is one of the largest outsourced medical facilities in support of the Department of Defense. Since 2018 International SOS Government Medical Services, has been subcontracted to manage the 10-bed Critical Access Kwajalein Hospital, dental clinic, veterinary clinic, and a medical clinic on Roi-Namur. Kwajalein is a 6.5 square mile atoll where bikes are the primary mode of transportation. The more than 1,500 residents include military personnel, Army Civilians, contractors, and their family members.  Kwajalein is home to one of the world’s largest coral atolls and lagoons. The year-round warm and sunny weather supports a variety of activities, such as scuba diving, sport fishing, sailing, and wind surfing.  The military base also boasts a movie theater, bowling alley, gym, golf course, ceramics studio, and small shopping areas.

Job Description

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist is responsible for administering anesthesia to both medical and dental surgical patients in the Kwajalein Health System.  In doing this, they must accurately administer, dose, and monitor anesthetics with the end goal of ensuring patient safety and quality outcomes for all procedures performed. In addition, the CRNA may be required to perform additional tasks including Emergency Department airway and trauma stabilization.  The Anesthesiologist is required to participate with the day-to-day Quality/Risk Management Teams strategies and activities.

Qualifications

  • Conducting all pre-anesthetic screenings, including physical evaluations, patient interviews, and documenting all results.
  • Creating, recommending, and implementing standard operating instructions and practices pertaining to the administration and management of anesthetics that ensure client safety, and privacy in timely fashion in accordance with confidentiality protocol.
  • Selecting and preparing equipment, monitors, supplies, or drugs for the administration of anesthetics. Calibrating and testing all equipment.
  • Prescribing and administering post-anesthesia medications or treatments to patients including, medications or fluids to support patient’s cardiovascular system.
  • Monitoring and evaluating patient’s post-surgical or post-anesthesia responses and reactions, taking appropriate corrective actions or requesting consultation if complications occur.
  • Deciding, ordering, and or administering pre-anesthetic medications, anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids or blood products as required.
  • Performing and evaluating the results of diagnostic tests such as radiographs (X-Rays)
  • and electrocardiograms (EKGs).
  • Inserting arterial catheters or arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples and peripheral or central intravenous catheters.
  • Maintaining patient’s airway or pulmonary status using techniques such as endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, respiratory therapy, and extubation.
  • Monitoring patients' responses, including skin color, pupil dilation, pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ventilation, or urine output, using invasive and noninvasive techniques.
  • Discharging patients from post-anesthesia care.
  • Educating staff on topics such as anesthetic techniques, pain management and emergency responses.
  • Routinely performing safety tests on anesthesia equipment and requesting repairs or adjustments as needed. Active participation in day to day office activities, including a variety of meetings and task force groups to improve procedural processes, obtain approvals, and remain abreast of new developments and policy requirements and regulations.
  • Active participation in Mass Casualty exercises and events.
  • Being the subject matter expert of the Quality/Risk Management team on Kwajalein, managing the day to day utilization of the program
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree (BSN) from an accredited program.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Nurse Anesthetist.
  • Master’s Degree in Nurse Anesthesia from an accredited program in the United States.
  • Possession of a current unrestricted US (State) license as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
  • Possess and maintain current certification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Skilled in the administration techniques of anesthesia, including epidurals and ultrasound-guided anesthesia. Current certification from the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred

  • This position is unaccompanied.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required. 
  • US DOD CNACI or the ability to obtain one is required.
  • Must be able to relocate or work on the United States Army Garrison - Kwajalein Atoll.
  • A valid passport is required and must be in your possession. You must maintain a current passport during your stay on Kwajalein Atoll.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • May require bending, stooping and lifting up to 15 lbs.
