Position Academic & Career Coach, Bridges to College & Careers program

JVS is a non-profit, non-sectarian agency. Our mission is to empower individuals from diverse communities to find employment and build careers and to partner with employers to hire, develop, and retain productive workforces. JVS provides a broad range of services, including adult education, skills training, job readiness training, job placement and support, and access to post-secondary education. JVS assists employers in their search for well-qualified job applicants and their initiatives to upgrade the skills of their incumbent workforce.

The Position: The Academic and Career Coach collaborates with members of the JVS team to provide one-on-one and group academic, career coaching, and job placement services to a diverse group of students, including those born in the U.S. and immigrants. This diversity is a testament to our inclusive program that values and supports individuals from all walks of life.

JVS’ Bridges to College program, a unique college transition program, is designed to meet the needs of those transitioning from Adult Basic Education/ESOL into college-level certificate or Associate Degree programs. It serves diverse populations, including refugees and immigrants, dislocated workers, individuals with disabilities, individuals transitioning off public assistance, and other low-income individuals with barriers to employment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Academic Coaching with Clients

  • As an Academic and Career Coach, you will play a crucial role in meeting program goals and outcomes and establishing, tracking, and meeting program dashboard indicators (attendance, retention in the program, enrollment in college, and client satisfaction).
  • Assist with planning and implementing changes in the academic coaching program based on the achievement of goals and outcomes.
  • Conduct one-on-one and group academic coaching sessions focusing on skills and competencies necessary for educational and job placement success. This includes a vital job readiness component, with an emphasis on social media job search activities, underscoring the relevance of your skills in today's job market.
  • Ensure that clients complete all steps for financial aid and college application process.
  • Monitor client progress via email, phone, and in person on a regular basis to support the completion of action steps; Enter all relevant data into the database (SalesForce)
  • Address barriers and assist clients in creating Individual Academic and Career Plans, establishing a series of attainable action steps and realistic timelines.
  • Maintain relationships with key college staff and work collaboratively, in a structured and ongoing manner, to assist students in enrolling in their chosen fields of study and succeeding in their college courses.
  • Assist with program outreach and intake efforts, including interviewing program applicants and facilitating information sessions.

Job Development & Placement

  • Responsible for job placement of select Bridges to College alums by providing a full spectrum of job search services and support.
  • Meet the program job placement goal of 90% by assisting program participants in the final semester of college through all phases of the job search process.
  • Collaborate with college partners to maximize employer relations and prepare students for successful job search activities.
  • Utilize appropriate social media channels to supplement traditional job search activities.
  • Work with program participants and alumni in both one-on-one and group settings on job search-related activities, including preparing job search documents, reviewing interviewing techniques, etc.
  • Develop employment leads and outreach to potential employers/recruiters to establish relationships that will lead to employment opportunities for job seekers.
  • Provide post-placement services, including follow-up with job seekers and employers.
  • Maintain job placement data and prepare monthly reports.

Administrative/Communication

  • Enter all coaching activities and outcomes on client progress into the ETO database.
  • Communicate with the Bridges to College team regarding any concerns that may impact the clients’ progress toward stated career goals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned as schedule allows.

Academic Services Team

  • Support the mission and philosophy of JVS.
  • Incorporate JVS Core Skills into coaching modules and one-on-one sessions (Organizing, Scheduling, Study Skills, Test-Taking Skills, Research, Computer Skills, Critical Thinking/Problem-Solving, Soft Skills).
  • Work collaboratively with and encourage collaboration between team members to ensure performance goals for JVS are met.
  • Attend and actively participate in all required (bi-weekly) staff meetings and team-based projects as needed.
  • Assist fellow team members when needed as schedule allows.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
  • Some evening hours will be required

  • Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  • 2 - 5 years of experience counseling or advising adults (or as an experienced educator), preferably in a pre-college or college environment; 1 -3 years of job development experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of coaching for college and career readiness.
  • Strong written, oral communication and presentation skills required.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite and social media skills are required for job search.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with a diverse group of clients at all levels of the organization.
  • Familiarity with career ladders and professional advancement protocols is preferred.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory is preferred.
  • Knowledge of community resources and web-based resources is preferred.
