Position Summary:Responsible for delivering Hilltop’s mission by providing a quality day camp experience for children; ensuring their safety and growth in spirit, mind, and body on a daily basis. Day Camp Staff are also responsible for the physical and emotional safety of children participating in biking activities. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children, a passion for humane education, and strong organizational and communication skills.Essential Functions:
  • Alongside a Lead Counselor, assist in the execution of weekly biking lesson plans that fit the children’s needs, interests, and developmental levels at camp.
  • Actively engage children ages 8-14 with group and individual instruction and training covering a range of mountain biking skills, to guests of all ages.
  • Lead children to and through daily activities, workshops, and outdoor excursions, ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment for all participants.
  • Foster a sense of community and teamwork among campers, encouraging cooperation, inclusivity, and mutual respect.
  • Ensure safety by firmly and tactfully enforcing all camp and biking-specific rules, policies, and guidelines.
  • Assist with setup and cleanup of camp facilities and equipment as needed.
  • Actively engage children in activities that will enhance their self-esteem.
  • Actively participate in all camp activities with campers.
  • Responsible for the welfare and safety of children enrolled in the group and in the program including always maintaining appropriate ratio of children to staff members and supervise with heightened awareness on field trips.
  • Effectively communicate verbal and written reports to parents.
  • Monitor and maintain accurate records including but not limited to attendance, absenteeism, transitions, minor disciplinary incidents, and accidents for each child in the group.
  • Characterize a positive role model.
  • Understand all aspects of the day camp position and apply trainings and experiences appropriately.
  • Attend all designated trainings and scheduled day camp trainings upon hire (ie. CPR, orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, etc.)
  • Adhere to applicable policies and procedures while recognizing the ‘big picture’ when dealing with problems and takes into consideration the effect of actions on all parties involved.
  • Demonstrate good time keeping, punctuality, and the ability to stay on schedule.
  • Treat all guests, staff, equipment, and facilities with courtesy and respect.
  • Attempt new ideas and go above and beyond to create new positive experiences for guests.
  • Protects confidential information regarding program participants, families, and staff members.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED certificate required. Associates degree in Early Childhood Education or related field from an accredited college or university and/or a Child Development Associate’s certificate (CDA) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum age for Jr Camp Counselor is 16 years old.
  • One or more years of related childcare or summer day camp experience strongly preferred.
  • Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Must demonstrate sound judgment and initiative and must display a positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to plan and organize educational activities, workshops, and outdoor excursions effectively.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and a positive attitude, with the ability to handle challenges and solve problems creatively.
  • Minimum of Intermediate Mountain Bike riding skills preferred.
  • Prior Mountain Bike instructing and guiding, or other teaching experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of implementation and facilitation of technical, and/or specialty training events and programs.
  • Teaching and facilitation skills
  • Ability to assess training needs and objectives.
  • Ability to design, develop, implement, and evaluate responsive programs and initiatives.
  • Able to Mountain Bike for extended periods of time, requiring lifting, bending, and twisting, or assist in mountain biking experience indirectly (i.e. trail guiding, supervision, setup, maintenance, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (preferred).
  • Background check may be required.
