Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator


The Department of Chemistry seeks applications for a Laboratory Coordinator and Radiation Safety Officer. This is a full-time, 12-month, benefited position. This position will report to the chair of the Chemistry Department.


The Chemistry Lab Coordinator works closely with chemistry faculty to facilitate chemistry and biochemistry lab courses, with an emphasis on introductory chemistry classes. The Lab Coordinator plays an essential role in the educational mission of the department. Responsibilities include a combination of instructional, laboratory, maintenance, and administrative tasks to coordinate and support the lab and lecture components of these courses.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparation and coordination supplies and equipment for all Chemistry and Biochemistry laboratory classes.

  • Assisting professors, student laboratory assistants, and students during General Chemistry laboratory classes.

  • Grading laboratory reports for all sections of General Chemistry laboratory classes.

  • Training General Chemistry laboratory assistants during a weekly meeting while laboratory classes are in session.

  • Supervising the set-up and return to storage of instruments required by the chemistry laboratory teaching program as directed by laboratory teaching schedules.

  • Working with faculty and the Stockroom Manager to monitor and maintain chemical instruments, lab equipment, chemicals and supplies.

  • Becoming well-versed in the operation and repair of shared departmental instruments and teach students how to safely and correctly operate these instruments.

  • Supervising the cryogenics and calibration for NMR equipment maintenance.

  • Serving as Radiation Safety Officer (training can be obtained upon employment).

  • Other duties as assigned in coordination with faculty and the Stockroom Manager to support the Chemistry instructional labs.


Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in chemistry or a related field

Radiation Safety Officer Certification (training can be obtained upon employment).

Ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, and external constituents who have a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences.

Knowledge and ability for the safe handling of chemicals and laboratory equipment/instruments.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with college students in a laboratory environment.

  • Knowledge and experience in using laboratory equipment in basic scientific research applications and ability to troubleshoot problems in use.

  • Ability to prepare solutions.

  • Familiarity with spreadsheets and/or databases.

  • 2 or more years’ experience working in academic or industrial laboratory environments.
