POSITION SUMMARY: The Clinic-Based Recovery Doula (RD) will provide delivery support services to families scheduled for delivery of their babies and connect them with continuing after-birth resources in their home communities. Doulas are trained, experienced professionals who provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to parents before, during, and after childbirth. Recovery doulas combine lived experience with substance use, mental health, or chronic illness diagnoses and Peer Support training to provide doula support services to expecting families. A successful doula has the ability to nurture, support, advocate, and gently guide as needed to provide practical, well-informed advice as well as fully supporting the parents’ choices with regard to having the best birth experience. Clinical supervision of the Recovery Doula is provided by a licensed Behavioral Health Provider.


COMPENSATION: 

              $18.31-18.90/hr DOE (non certified)

              $21.92 - $23.84/hr DOE (certified Doula)

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part Time,  16 hrs/week

Specialist Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintains functionality of organization and/or department by managing tasks and information to optimize processes.
  2. Responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the organization and/or department.
  3. Serves as the first point of contact for patients, vendors, and employees.
  4. Collaborates and communicates within teams, supports others, and contributes positively to the overall success of the organization.

Position Specific Duties and Responsibilities


  1. Maintains stable recovery and necessary care/treatment of behavioral health challenges and is willing to self-identify publicly as being in recovery from a mental health, substance use, or addiction diagnosis.
  2. Responsible for following an individual mom/family, enrolled in Sacred Families, through the birthing process and beyond to provide emotional, physical, and informational support.
  3. Completes a Family Plan of Safe Care with each family and connects with Child Protective Services (CPS) if a current case is already open. The doula will work with families to encourage a proactive relationship with CPS.
  4. Completes the basic screen for resource needs and refers the family to the appropriate One Health community worker for assessment and referral to needed services.
  5. Supports the family according to regular/weekly patterns of peer support in relation to Substance Use Disorder (SUD), mental health, or chronic illness needs up until 2 weeks before birth when support will become more intensive with daily check-ins.
  6. Monitors patient charts for required Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) once per trimester and once post partem. Refer patients to provider if there are gaps in the SBIRT data collection.
  7. Attends huddles for healthcare and behavioral healthcare to stay informed of each client’s treatment plan.
  8. Supports families to make regular appointments to achieve adequate prenatal care and engage in helpful activities like groups and recovery community events.
  9. Works with the family at the hospital during the labor and birth process and stay for 1-2 hours following the birth. During this time they will collect data regarding the birth, the infant, and the mother.
  10. Continues to support the family intensively at home following the birth for two weeks to provide assistance and provide post-partum support and education. After two weeks postpartum the pattern of support will return to peer support.
  11. Facilitates Centering Pregnancy cohorts and provides birth education using the Sacred Families curriculum with the goal of providing this education for every pregnant family at One Health.
  12. Provides Motherhood/Fatherhood is Sacred and/or Circle of Security parenting classes.
  13. Provides lactation counseling as needed for all enrolled families.
  14. Tracks and compiles data required for completion of grant-related quality assurance/quality improvement projects and all required Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funding reports.
  15. Adheres to all One Health Policies and Procedures.
  16. Participates in performance optimization and risk management activities as required.
  17. Cooperates and abides by all elements of One Health’s Compliance Program.
  18. Exemplifies a patient-centered care approach to each patient along each stage of the patient journey, while working as a key patient centered team member by communicating individual patient care needs to support the needs of patients served.
  19. Provides exceptional customer service and models the mission of One Health when interacting with internal and external stakeholders promoting a positive image for the health center.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned or required with or without prior notification.


MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 


Education/Certificates/Licenses: 

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED


  • Certified Lactation Counselor Certification (must be obtained within the first year of employment)
  • Certified Facilitator for Fatherhood/Motherhood is Sacred and/or Circle of Security (must be obtained within the first 6 months)
  • BLS Certification within 30 days of hire
  • Valid driver’s license


Preferred

  • Certified Behavioral Health Peer Support (PS 101 may be completed within the first 30 days of employment) For SUD/Mental Health peer supporters only.
  • WRAP training
  • Motivational or Solutions-Based Interviewing
  • Trauma-informed care training

 

Experience:

Required

  • Lived experience with substance use and/or mental health challenges and at least two (2) years of successful recovery
  • Community outreach and education
  • Passion for supporting birthing families
  • Competent computer skills, including Microsoft Office


Preferred

  • Five (5) years’ experience in community organizing, youth work, ministry, education, or public health.
  • State Certification as a Behavioral Health Peer Support Specialist
  • Certification as a Birth/Post-Partum Doula
