New York, United States Committee to Protect Journalists Full time
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionSalary: Negotiable

Position Title: Website and Social Media Consultant

Department: Advocacy and Communications

Location: U.S. - Remote (EST time zone preferred)

Project Duration: 3 Months from start date

How to apply: Please submit a letter of interest (including your day rate), résumé, a professional portfolio demonstrating your web design and social media experience (including links to live sites when possible), and three professional references.

Application Deadline: June 28, 2024

Organization Overview:

Founded in 1981, the Committee to Protect Journalists (“CPJ”) is an independent, non-profit organization defending journalists worldwide without regard to their political ideology. Through its work to safeguard journalists, CPJ protects the rights of all people to have access to diverse and independent sources of information. For nearly four decades, CPJ has helped win the early release of imprisoned journalists, secure convictions in journalist murders, and enable positive legal reform in countries where the climate for free expression has deteriorated. Learn more about CPJ’s fight to defend freedom of the press here: CPJ Website.

At CPJ, we are dedicated to upholding values of equity and free expression in both our internal operations and external endeavors. As an organization headquartered in the United States, we aspire to build a diverse workplace and foster an inclusive and welcoming environment. As an international organization, we strive for our people to be representative of the global community on which we report and to equip them with the opportunities and resources they need to learn and succeed.

Project Summary:

CPJ seeks an accomplished web design consultant with social media experience to provide technical support and lead on special projects across the organization’s WordPress site, CPJ.org. The consultant will also assist with content development for CPJ’s social media channels, as needed. The role is intended to support CPJ’s ongoing efforts to implement a website refresh and streamline processes while maintaining daily workflows.

The consultant should be skilled at applying a data-driven approach to web and UX/UI design and be well-versed in designing for mission-driven organizations. Knowledge about and a passion for international affairs, human rights, journalism, or press freedom issues would be helpful. We anticipate this will be a three-month engagement requiring approximately 30 hours or less per week to fulfill the scope and deliverables, but it may increase during high-intensity periods. The term may be extended beyond the initially contemplated three-month period, depending on the circumstances. The consultant is expected to work in the Eastern Time Zone and may work remotely or from CPJ’s NYC office and should be adept at working in a fast-paced environment. The consultant will support the Digital Communications Manager and will interact mostly within the Advocacy and Communications department but may interact with other parts of the organization.

Project Scope:

  • Work closely with the Digital Communications Manager to mock up new page layouts for various content types on CPJ.org.
  • Using GA4 reports and other metrics, work closely with the Digital Communications Manager to reorganize the site map and propose changes to the top navigation menu to be in line with current organization-wide structures and priorities as outlined in CPJ’s current strategic plan; propose content consolidation and creation where necessary, with an eye to the end-user journey and important KPIs; implement changes as appropriate working with CPJ’s external web developers.
  • Propose improvements to the site’s search functions and tagging system; implement changes as appropriate, working with CPJ’s external web developers.
  • Support the Digital Communications Manager to ensure a unified voice across messaging and content on the website and social media platforms
  • Execute social media strategies as needed for CPJ’s global accounts. This would include conceptualizing and crafting social media packages, producing graphic treatments of content, and social media campaigns.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of substantive web design and social media management experience, preferably for a global nonprofit organization or mission-driven organization. Experience with human rights or social causes is preferred.
  • Experience with WordPress, Google Analytics (UA/GA4), UX/UI design, and collaborative design tools such as Figma.
  • Experience managing social media accounts for an international organization (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube); deep knowledge of management and analytics tools.
  • Commitment to press freedom complemented by excellent news judgment and knowledge of advocacy messaging and framing.
  • Highly creative with experience identifying target audiences and devising social media campaigns that engage, inform, and motivate.
  • Impeccable writing and editing skills in English; additional languages are welcome.
  • Strong technical acumen, with the ability to quickly understand and communicate technical concepts and challenges related to digital projects/campaigns.
  • Ability to multitask and juggle multiple deadlines across time zones.
  • Basic design skills and ability to produce basic materials for web, social campaigns, events, or other digital marketing.
  • Creative, solutions-oriented, with a flexible and collaborative approach to work.

Equal Employment Opportunity:

CPJ provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), parental status, national origin, age, disability, genetic information (including family medical history), political affiliation, military service, or other non-merit-based factors.
