What We Need

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking an America the Beautiful Manager to advance the goals of America the Beautiful through policy and governance actions that strengthen and expand the National Marine Sanctuary System.

The Biden-Harris administration has launched an ambitious and inclusive vision for conservation in the United States. America the Beautiful is a decade-long challenge to pursue a locally-led nationwide effort to conserve, connect, and restore the lands, waters, and wildlife upon which we all depend. Marine protected areas (MPAs), including national marine sanctuaries, are one of our best strategies for addressing the stated goals of America the Beautiful: addressing the climate crisis, stemming biodiversity loss, and increasing equitable access to nature. Six new national marine sanctuaries that embody the values of the America the Beautiful initiative are currently undergoing the sanctuary designation process and more communities are investing in new sanctuary nominations every day.

The America the Beautiful Manager will help develop and advance policies and strategies to enhance conservation and stewardship of our marine and Great Lakes environments through national marine sanctuaries and marine national monuments. As part of this work, the Manager will build and maintain relationships with key external partners including NGOs, Administration officials, Congressional offices, and local communities.

The America the Beautiful Manager will work closely with the Policy Manager and Senior Vice President of External Affairs to support open communication and strategic planning. They will also engage the Foundation’s Communications, Conservation, Education and Outreach, and Development Departments. In addition to the Foundation’s staff, the America the Beautiful Manager will work closely with federal partners in the National Marine Sanctuary System and a diverse array of community champions. The America the Beautiful Manager will act as a key liaison for matters related to advancing America the Beautiful.

This role is currently offered as a three-year term position. Position may be extended based on continued availability of funding. The America the Beautiful Manager supports the scope of a federal cooperative agreement between the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries that focuses on public engagement in the designation process of new national marine sanctuaries.

What You’ll Do

  • Support the growth of the National Marine Sanctuary System through expansions, designations, and nominations with communities interested in new sanctuaries to advance America the Beautiful.
  • Support the exploration, development, and implementation of strategies to advance ocean equity in sanctuaries.
  • Develop relationships and trust with grassroots and grasstops partners to achieve the goals of America the Beautiful.
  • Support the Senior Vice President of External Affairs and Policy Manager in recruiting, developing, and deepening relationships with Administration officials and Members of Congress to advance America the Beautiful through protected waters.
  • Collaborate with the Program Teams to advance stewardship and conservation of sanctuaries, including co-stewardship and equitable governance opportunities, habitat restoration, species recovery and conservation, and education and outreach.
  • Manage and host biannual America the Beautiful Roundtables, a partnership with the Foundation and NOAA to bring key partners and voices together to prioritize actions and partnerships for advancing the initiative.
  • Support the management of and report on the impact of the Foundation's Sanctuary Community Fund including coordination with NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and Foundation staff.
  • Support major Foundation events, including Capitol Hill Ocean Week, the Blue Beacon Series, Get Into Your Sanctuary, and National Marine Sanctuary Day with policy planning, engagement, and execution and on-site assistance.
  • Develop tools, templates, visualizations, and communications materials emphasizing the opportunities to protect nationally significant resources in the Sanctuary System and support America the Beautiful
  • Support the Development Department with grant writing and implementation of public-private partnership funding mechanisms to advance America the Beautiful.


Who You Are

Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 3-5 years of experience working with the Executive Branch, Congress, and/or environmental organizations, grassroots organizing, or working on campaigns.
  • Knowledge of the legislative and administrative process.
  • Ability to think creatively about challenges and issues, partnerships, and solutions for ocean, coast, and Great Lakes conservation.
