Inpatient Staff Supervisor – Position Summary

Position Overview:

The Inpatient Staff Supervisor serves as the primary leader of the technical team, which includes Veterinary Nurses and Kennel Attendants. This role requires strong leadership qualities, effective communication skills, and a deep understanding of medical conditions and treatments. The Inpatient Staff Supervisor models service excellence, upholds professional standards, and ensures adherence to Bloomsburg Veterinary Hospital's policies, protocols, core values, and AAHA standards. This includes our commitment to upholding the principles of Fear Free practices to minimize pain, fear, anxiety, and stress in patients. This role includes both supervisory responsibilities and the performance of technician duties as needed.

As a member of the leadership team, the Inpatient Staff Supervisor is entrusted with sensitive information and discussions that are integral to the smooth operation of our hospital. While transparency and open communication are valued, it is equally important to exercise discretion, understanding that certain conversations and decisions are meant to remain confidential to protect the integrity of the organization and the well-being of our team. This responsibility underscores our commitment to maintaining a professional and supportive environment for both our staff and clients.

 

Responsibilities

 

Leadership & Team Management:

  • Lead and manage the technical team, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to Veterinary Nurses and Kennel Attendants.
  • Conduct regular team meetings, performance evaluations, and coordinate training sessions to ensure the team is up to date with the latest procedures, protocols, and standards.
  • Participate in the recruitment, screening, hiring, and training of Veterinary Nurses and Kennel Attendants.
  • Develop and maintain training manuals, job descriptions, and performance evaluation tools for the in-patient technical team.
  • Oversee scheduling, ensuring adequate coverage based on daily business needs.
  • Administer disciplinary actions and mediate personnel disputes as per company policy.
  • Delegate tasks effectively to ensure the smooth operation of the team.
  • Fulfill the responsibilities of Shift Supervisor, the designated leader for the hospital, as assigned.

Client Services:

  • Handle client grievances professionally, ensuring resolution in alignment with BVH standards.
  • Oversee communication with clients regarding payment issues and scheduling, including the approval of urgent/emergency appointments and surgical procedures.
  • Dispense controlled substances as directed by veterinarians and monitor compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements.


Facility & Equipment Management:

  • Ensure the maintenance and proper functioning of surgical, diagnostic, and laboratory equipment.
  • Develop, update, and enforce hospital protocols across all departments.
  • Manage facility opening and closing procedures and maintain security protocols, including key distribution.

 

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Outpatient Staff Supervisor, Client Services Supervisor, Practice Management team, and Practice Owners to ensure seamless operations across all departments.
  • Step in to support the Outpatient staff and Client Service Representatives in the absence of either team supervisor.
  • Collaborate with leadership team to maintain a high standard of patient care and client service.

 

Qualifications

 

Experience & Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Certified Veterinary Technician required.
  • Minimum of five years of veterinary experience preferred.
  • Supervisory experience in a veterinary or medical setting is highly preferred.

 

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Must possess a comprehensive understanding of how our veterinary hospital operates and the ability to make decisions with the broader hospital workflow in mind.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of medical terms, procedures, and job-related technology.
  • Ability to lead a team, delegate tasks, and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with the hospital's software systems.
  • Thorough training in all areas of the Veterinary Assistant and CSR training manuals.
  • Completion of Fear Free Certification Levels 1-3.

 


Physical & Work Environment:

  • Regularly required to handle objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift objects over 30 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, sitting, walking, stooping, kneeling, and maintaining awkward positions.
  • Required to handle and physically restrain animals.
  • Moderate noise levels typical of a veterinary hospital environment.

 

Continuing Education:

  • Minimum of 20 hours per year on management topics.
  • Minimum of 16 hours biannually on technician-related topics.

 

Employment Terms

 

Work Hours:

  • Full-time position with a minimum of 35 hours. The schedule to be determined by the Practice Managers and Practice Owners.
  • The Inpatient Staff Supervisor will spend no less than an average of 60% of their time on Veterinary Nurse duties.

  • Practice Management Team

 

Compensation:

  • Hourly wage as determined by the Practice Managers and Practice Owners.
