POSITION SUMMARY

The Controls Engineer is responsible for design, management, documentation, and testing of AIC equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Design control panels to meet UL508A / CSA 22.2 standards meeting NEC codes.
  • Programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Smart Relays, Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
  • Select components to meet specifications including sensors, motor control components (VFDs, Overloads, MSPs, Contactors, etc.), user interfaces (pilot devices, HMIs, etc.), circuit protection (fuses, circuit breakers, etc.), processors / controllers (PLCs, Programmable relays, VFDs, etc.), and enclosures.
  • Ability to read and analyze project plans and specifications and create submittals including and identifying any exceptions.
  • Develop and maintain As-Built drawings and document all changes including saving and preserving all related correspondence related to changes.
  • Use EPLAN Electric P8 to Create 2D/3D electrical schematics and panel layouts that will be used during the production process. Creation of Bill of Materials (BOMs) for project design using preferred vendors wherever possible.
  • Review and report costs to assist project manager in meeting budget requirements.
  • React to project changes and supplier issues quickly with alternative components and design modifications to maintain project timelines.
  • Facilitate discussions with project stake holders regarding quality issues and schedule forecasts.
  • Quote projects including engineering time requirements and materials specification.
  • Ability to obtain Siemens PLC Programming and ABB VFD certifications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or management.
  • Work with customers to manage project flow, needs, and resolve customer issues.
  • Build relationships with key vendors such as Siemens, Mitsubishi, ABB, and Eaton.
  • Provide project quotes in a timely and accurate manner.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Four-year college degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (Preferred but not required).
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in industrial controls.
  • Ability to develop control specifications from a sequence of operations.
  • Proficient with computers and networking as it pertains to programming and connecting to industrial devices and networks.
  • Microsoft Office: Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Power Point, and Outlook required.
  • EPLAN P8 for electrical drawings.
  • Proficient in component selection, spacing and wire bending requirements, NEMA ratings, and other component specifications.
  • NEC and UL code as pertains to electrical panels.
  • Proficient with Siemens, Allen Bradley, and Mitsubishi PLCs.
  • HMI and PLC (ladder logic) programming; Siemens and Allen Bradly preferred.
  • VFDs commissioning and communications; ABB and Mitsubishi preferred.
  • Industrial communications protocols including Ethernet IP, Modbus TCP, Profinet, and Modbus 485.
  • Proficient in motor controls, circuit protection, and wiring standards.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong organization skills; ability to talk to customers from engineering, maintenance, management, and jurisdictional authorities; ability to talk to and relate with panel assembly personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Be a motivated self-starter; ability to work without constant supervision or micromanaging. Ability to set, commit, and fulfill timelines.
  • Ability to learn quickly with excellent capacity to develop skills and contribute using defined processes.
  • Quickly analyze, interpret, and compare detailed information.
  • Ability to work additional hours and/or weekends, when required.
  • Effectively manage time addressing the comprehensive needs of your assigned projects.
  • Execution-focused with the ability to take individual responsibility for delivering quality work in a deadline driven environment with a high level of precision.
  • Effective communication skills to cross departments, peers, project management, and senior management.
