Under the direction of the Wellness and Sports Director the Teen Scene & Open Gym Supervisor will have a multi-purpose use within the Sports Department. The Teen Scene & Open Gym Supervisor will serve as a leader during Teen Scene programming instructing the program participants and organizing program. They will be responsible for maintaining a safe instructional environment while instructing program participants the principles of sports and developmentally appropriate introduction to a variety of sports/activities and skills centered around the YMCA core values and character development. The Open Gym Supervisor is the contact person during peak time in the Gymnasium. They will take a leading role in building relationships with members and program participants through effective and positive customer service. The Open Gym Supervisor is responsible for proactively maintaining a safe and clean environment while answering questions or comments members may have regarding the Sports Department. This role requires evening and weekend work as defined by the needs of the program and your People Leader.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Follows developmentally appropriate teaching methods and recommended guidelines
  • Incorporates creative and fun instructional methods and activities into sports classes
  • Act as lead staff person during shift creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all members and guests:
    • Is the contact person regarding Sports Department inquiries, scheduling etc.
  • Engage all Gymnasium members in a professional and courteous manner:
    • Greet/says hello and goodbye to all participants in the gym area and learns members names and call them by their names
    • Listen and be accessible to all members for questions and comments Follow-up as needed
  • Engage members on new sports classes, new leagues, new changes, etc.
  • Oversees and ensures cleanliness of all Gymnasium equipment
  • Maintain proper functioning and/or report malfunctioning of Gymnasium Equipment to supervisor or takes proper action in absence of supervisor
  • Adheres and incorporates the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility and educates members about the YMCA mission and goals
  • Is responsible for complying with all Greater Somerset County YMCA Policies and Procedures
  • Attends trainings, seminars and meetings as required

OTHER DUTIES

  • Establish long-term relationships with members; Welcomes parents and children to the room, answers and solves member questions and concerns and learn members’ names and call them by their names
  • Is responsible for adhering to all Department Standards including, but not limited to:

a. Not taking part in any activity that will be a distraction from supervision of your class.

b. Using appropriate instructional equipment and returning it to storage at the end of class.

c. Getting a substitute when unable to work assigned shift

d. Providing lesson plans for substitute when unable to work

e. Arriving prior to start of shift with enough time to prepare for class and be in the Gymnasium prior to start of class.

f. Maintain personal sports abilities

  • Follows all procedures for reporting accidents/incidents and crisis communication
  • Wears appropriate uniform/attire
  • All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be 18 years of age or older

• Has working knowledge and personal experience working with Gymnasium equipment

• Knowledge of variety of sports and rules, to include basketball, table tennis, pickle ball, badminton.

• Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or obtain within 90 days of hire

• Current Blood borne Pathogens certification

• Child Abuse Prevention Training within 30 days of hire

• New Staff Orientation Training within 90 days of hire
