DEFINITION / GENERAL PURPOSE:

Plans, organizes and coordinates a community athletic recreation program for youth and adults.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Superintendent.

None generally. May supervise part‑time recreation staff, special interest instructors, seasonal employees, and volunteers.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Train and supervises aquatic staff, athletic staff and volunteers for each sport.

Survey athletic interests and needs of youth and adults.

Develops, organizes, promotes and administers athletic and aquatic programs for youth and adults. Prepares schedules for adult and youth athletic activities including league games and playoffs, registration periods, field maintenance and pool maintenance.

Determines material, equipment, facility, supervision or instruction needs for each activity or program and coordinates with other staff members. Coordinates sports programs, registers teams, collects fees, assigns practice times, distributes and collects uniforms.

Manages and supervises the planning, development, implementation, promotion and evaluation of aquatic programs, athletic programs and special events for a diverse group of people.

Secures and schedules use of athletic fields, gymnasiums for practices and games, secure aquatic facilities and facility rentals.

Responds to public inquiries about athletic, aquatic, and event programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.

Prepares for publication a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, flyers, and related communications regarding athletic and aquatic programs.

Coordinates schedules and maintains related records and statistics for athletic and aquatic programs and personnel.

Schedule games and umpires for basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, and other games.

Schedules and runs various tournaments throughout the year for a variety of sports, such as baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, racquetball, volleyball, etc.

Enforces policies and procedures for staff, swim team members, instructors, volunteers, and guests.

Assists in the scheduling of activities at the Civic Center.

Promotes interest and provides information regarding recreation programs to community leaders, recreation officials, community service groups, other departments, and the general public.

The employee must have the ability to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.

Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, making arrangements for rental and use of Recreation Building, helping set up tables and chairs for classes, etc.

Ability to effectively communicate and work with citizens who may have complaints on services provided.

Communicates plans, policies and procedures to staff and the general public. Issues written and oral instructions and assigns duties and conducts follow ups for accuracy.

Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.

Performs other essential duties as required to achieve successful operations of the department.

Must be able to follow directions.

Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.


PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

Assists in the planning and management of any concession related activities, including design, layout, operation, inventory, contracting and staffing.

Assists in the recruitment and selection of part‑time and seasonal staff.

Other Duties as assigned.


DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED equivalent;

Six (6) months experience in Recreation or related field;

Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Texas state driver's license or ability to obtain one by date of hire.

Certifications:

Must possess Water Safety Instructor License, Certified Pool Operator License, and current lifeguard certification within (6) months of employment.

Must have First Aid and CPR certification or obtain one within six (6) months of employment.

Must be available to work weekends and various hours to attend events, activities and meetings.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning and administration;

Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment;

Skill in First Aid and CPR required;

Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public;

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;

Ability to plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers;

Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule;

Ability to understand, follows, and transmits written and oral instructions.


SELECTION GUIDELINES:

Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check; pre-employment drug screening; job related tests may be required.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Personal computer, including word processing software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; mobile, portable, and base radio unit; television, DVD and overhead projector; automobile.
