Position Responsibilities & Duties

  1. Leads the Quality Assurance and Sanitation teams through effective planning, organizing, staffing, coaching, counseling, training and cost control.
  • Leads the day-to-day operations for QA and Sanitation and works closely with operations leadership to implement and standardize all food safety, SQF, and quality policies, programs and procedures. Identifies and implements best practices for quality and sanitation to support strategic initiatives.
  • Manages the incoming material, in-process and finished product testing processes to assure specification compliance.
  • Maintains the quality data management systems (Intelex, ERP).
  • Manages the non-conforming material process. Determines dispositions and works with operations to identify root cause and corrective actions using problem solving tools and processes.
  • Leads the training and development of the QA Technicians, Sanitation Team Leader and Team members.
  • Provides support to Sales, R&D and Operations regarding customer issues, questions and concerns. Initiates and/or investigates customer complaints. Corresponds with customers on investigation results, root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Maintains calibration and maintenance of lab and sanitation equipment and maintains the chemical control program for sanitation.
  • Investigates unacceptable sanitation results and determines root cause and corrective actions
  • Manages the Environmental Monitoring Program.
  • Conducts sanitary design review for new equipment installations and existing equipment.
  • Works directly with the pest control to assure that program is maintained in accordance with requirements and appropriate records are maintained, reviewed and verified.

  1. Development, execution and validation of plant level quality and food safety systems
  • Develop, implement and execute effective food safety and quality programs to meet all regulatory, customer, SQF, and internal requirements and ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Serves as SQF Practitioner for facility. Manages and maintains SQF programs to maintain and improve Level 3 certification. Leads customer and 3rd party audits.
  • Maintains all Food Safety (HACCP) Plans, Ingredient Risk Assessments, Quality Plans, and Food Defense plans, and verifies effectiveness through trend analysis and statistical reporting.
  • Leads and manages the Internal Audit Programs in compliance with SQF. Verifies system implementation and validates effectiveness. Performs Internal Audit Team training and mentors team members on auditing fundamentals and process.
  • Performs SQF Food Safety Reviews for all new formula activations.
  • Executes food safety and quality programs within the annual budget to meet financial targets.
  • Develops forms and/or documentation methods to support all systems and ensure accurate documentation and records.
  • Ensures all employees are trained on all relevant food safety and quality training. Provides and/or participates in training sessions including annual refreshers and New Hire Orientation.

  1. Leading team to identify opportunities for improvement, as well as leading the development and implementation of the solutions and follow-up to assure success.
  • Ability to apply appropriate statistical methods to better understand and improve plant equipment and processes, evaluate new or changed equipment or processes and resolve quality problems (SPC).
  • Works with corporate New Product Development and Food Engineering teams to implement the Commercialization plan on all new products. Assures all relevant food safety and quality information is obtained and integrated for product innovation and commercialization.


Essential Skills

  • Related Experience: Minimum of three years QA management experience in a food processing environment. Significant experience with quality, food safety and sanitation practices required. Comprehensive knowledge of relevant federal and state mandated regulations required such as FDA and USDA Rules and Regulations, Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), HACCP, GMPs, and Bioterrorism Act.

  • Education Level: Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry or related field. Five years of proven QA management, food safety and sanitation experience in a food processing environment might be substituted for a portion of the degree.

  • Licenses/Certification: HACCP Certification, SQF Practitioner Certification, PCQI Certification.

  • Must have ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve quality and food safety issues and improve programs.

  • Expertise Level: Highly refined people management, planning, and organization skills. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, math skills, attention to detail, strong problem solving and analytical skills, strong understanding of quality systems and quality auditing.

  • Self-motivated; self-disciplined with ability to lead an HPWP high-performing team with limited direction.

  • Work well in fast-paced environment of high expectations and proficient at conflict resolution.

  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office Applications and ability to become proficient in SAP QM, and Intelex.
