Job Description:

The Molecular And Cellular Biological Scientist will support research on the cellular mechanisms related to substance abuse and HIV biology.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life
    • Develop and maintain liaisons and effective working relations with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage
      cooperative management strategies or to develop information and interpret findings
  • Assists with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures
    • Collect and analyze biological data about relationships among and between organisms and their environment
    • Monitor and observe experiments, recording production and test data for evaluation by research personnel
    • Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings
    • Coordinate the work of biological technicians and technologists and other scientists
    • Familiar with techniques to measure proteins and nucleic acids both in cells and tissue. Techniques such as sectioning brains, process
      tissue using immunohistochemistry and/or in-situ hybridization techniques, analyze tissue and perform cell counts using image analysis
      software. Dissect brain tissue and isolate genomic DNA, RNA or protein and analyze by qPCR methods (DNA/RNA) or western blot
      (protein)
  • Prepares, organizes and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment
    • Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame
      photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers
    • Maintain laboratory equipment
    • Operate laboratory equipment to analyze samples
    • Analyze laboratory findings
    • Maintains clear and accurate records of laboratory work in defined notebooks and converts those records to electronic records as
      appropriate
    • Collect and analyze data; organize spreadsheets; prepare graphs, reports, summaries and illustrations for use and tracking of protocol
      activity
    • Record research findings daily using a digitized method 
  • Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures
    • Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data
    • Interpret research or operational data
    • Record research or operational data
  • Clean and inspect equipment
  • Run validation
  • Meet with lab members to present updates
  • Other related duties as assigned


Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in molecular biology or neuroscience.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent oral and written skills.
  • Skills required in biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular biology, and PCR-related technology.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand or walk regularly, have correctable near vision, depth perception, distinguish basic colors, use both hands, reach above shoulder level, and perform repetitive activities.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with the National Institute of Health (NIH).
