Position Summary:

St. Mary Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare has a part-time employment opportunity for a Pastoral Care Associate. The Pastoral Care Department also serves St. Mary Villa for Independent & Retirement Living, located within the same facility.


St. Mary Center & St. Mary Villa, are part of Catholic Health Group, stewards of the Catholic tradition in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and are located in Lansdale, PA.


Reporting to the Pastoral Care Director and working in collaboration with the Pastoral Care Team, the Pastoral Care Associate provides spiritual, religious, and personal guidance and support to residents, families, and staff of all faiths and denominations with a special focus on maintaining and enhancing the Catholic identity of the institution.


Schedule:

To optimize the presence of Pastoral Care within the facility, the Pastoral Care Associate is available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, according to a flexible schedule coordinated with the Director of Pastoral Care.


Roles and Responsibilities:

The Pastoral Care Associate is responsible for knowledge of the mission and philosophy of St. Mary Center & Villa within the scope of responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:

  1. Providing spiritual and emotional support to residents, families, and staff through regular and systematic visitation with special attention to new residents and residents on hospice/comfort care;
  2. Assisting in planning and celebration of Masses, sacramental celebrations, and prayer experiences, including for funerals, holidays, and Holy Days;
  3. Functioning as a liturgical minister, including Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (after training, appointment, and commissioning);
  4. Collaborating with volunteers and staff for the care of Ss. Nereus and Achilleus Chapel;
  5. Working to maintain an environment throughout the facility reflective of Catholic faith and identity;
  6. Leading faith sharing sessions, public and private prayer services/devotions;
  7. Assisting in the recruitment, formation, scheduling, and recognition of Pastoral Care volunteers;
  8. Participation in departmental meetings and training/formation sessions;
  9. Clerical and office responsibilities, including maintenance of appropriate records and databases, as well as documentation of activities according to facility requirements;
  10. Visiting residents during their stays in local hospitals;
  11. Representing St. Mary Center & Villa at funerals of residents and staff, when possible;
  12. Representing the Director in his absence;
  13. Other duties as needed and assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Living a personal and dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ as an active, practicing Catholic in full communion with the Catholic Church.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Theology, Religious Studies, Spirituality, or related field preferable, along with experience in pastoral ministry and service.
  • Ministry experience within a healthcare setting a plus.
  • Consecrated religious and ordained deacons in good standing encouraged to apply.

Working Conditions:

  • Some direct contact with patients/residents with communicable disease using acceptable universal precautions.
  • Substantial time spent with patients, their loved ones, and staff, which requires a high degree of spiritual sensitivity, emotional energy, and mental alertness.
  • Must have mobility through the healthcare institution's facilities, which are handicapped accessible.
  • Excellent listening skills required, as well as ability to handle stress associated with ministering to patients/residents and their loved ones who experience pain, suffering, death, and grief.
  • Comfort praying both spontaneously and formally with individuals and groups and speaking honestly about faith, hope, and charity, particularly within the context of end-of-life issues.
