As an IT Network Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role as the backbone of our network infrastructure. Your work will directly empower the City of Kings Mountain to provide continuous, reliable services to our valued citizens. Here’s what you can expect:

On-Premise Excellence: This position is based on-site, allowing you to collaborate closely with colleagues and stakeholders. Your expertise will directly impact the daily operations of our city services.

Reporting to the IT Director: You’ll work closely with our IT Director, contributing to strategic decisions and implementing cutting-edge solutions.

Empowering Services: By maintaining and optimizing our network infrastructure, you’ll equip our teams with the necessary tools to serve our community effectively.

General Definition of Work:

Performs technical work regarding systems performance, security, patching, forecasting and monitoring. Work is performed under regular supervision and reports directly to the IT Director.

Essential Duties and Tasks: (Omission of specific duties does not exclude them)

  • Primary responsibilities are designing, implementing, documentation, and maintaining network hardware resources and hardening network security. Networks include City network, Police 911 systems, telephone systems, and security camera systems.
  • Continuous improvement of network security from architecture design, security patching and configuration hardening.
  • Patching / upgrading physical servers, virtualization and network infrastructure in a timely manner.
  • Open, work and manage support tickets with IT support engineers/vendors (as well as with third parties).
  • Integrate and manage MFA with various systems as well as SSO (single sign on).
  • Configuration and monitoring of network devices using monitoring tools such as PRTG.
  • Assess network resources to forecast needs such as storage and predict future growth and plan to accommodate.
  • Learn and assess exchange server use and mail related issues; monitor and forecast growth.
  • Gather information and provide input/recommendations to the IT Director on tactical and strategic decision making with respect to equipment, security and project forecasting.
  • Draft professional communications to users to coordinate planned and unplanned service interruptions.
  • Assists the IT Department with general trouble tickets, hardware troubleshooting, repair and replacement as needed.
  • Create and maintain network maps, diagrams, documentation.
  • Assists with city owned cellular smart phones and mobile device management.
  • Cross train with other positions within IT for redundancy and familiarity with all operations.
  • Assist in resolving network and hardware problems in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Willing to do after hours work as needed and take after hour’s calls for emergencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of security protocols and best practices.
  • Strong knowledge of Networking, Routing and Switching protocol is required.
  • Familiarity with data storage management and backups such as Veeam.
  • Familiarity with exchange and email flow/security would be beneficial but not required.
  • Working knowledge of physical and virtual server environments and management such as VMware/vSphere/hyperflex.
  • Strong project planning and management; time management skills.
  • Must be strong in deductive reasoning and analytical thinking for problem solving.
  • Ability to take ownership, track and make progress on multiple projects and tasks assigned.
  • Strong knowledge of personal computer and office automation systems, software and programs; skill in the use of software operating systems;
  • Ability to understand and follow written or oral procedures and instructions;
  • Good people skills and ability to train users; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with people in a friendly and professional way.
  • Support the team by participating in the rotation of staff to operate equipment for council meetings and online broadcasts

Desirable Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and 5+ years work experience in maintaining information systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to perform the physical life operational functions of finger dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, perform accounting processes, operate a computer terminal, perform visual inspections, and assemble parts of a system.

Special Requirements:

Possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license and have dependable transportation.
