Job DescriptionJob DescriptionStructural Integrity Associates, Inc. (SIA), an engineering consulting firm dedicated to the analysis and prevention of mechanical and structural failures for a variety of industries, is seeking a Metallurgical Technician at our state-of-the-art testing laboratory in Austin, Texas.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of duties related to metallurgical failure analysis methods, including:
    • Documentation of as-received samples within the laboratory
    • Preparation of samples for metallographic examination (cutting, mounting, polishing, etching)
    • Documentation of prepared samples with metallurgical and digital microscopes
    • Perform laser scans of samples, as needed, to record component geometry
    • Perform routine maintenance of laboratory systems and equipment
  • Support field condition assessment projects associated with a variety of mechanical components (piping, valves, turbine components, etc.).  The anticipated travel requirement for this portion of the job is approximately 2 to 3 months per year, often during spring and fall outage seasons, and typically in spans of a few days up to two weeks (with overtime paid in accordance with SIA’s payroll policies):
    • Travel to client power plant sites or repair shops with SIA field engineering teams
    • Perform field metallurgical testing (metallographic replication, hardness testing, etc.)
    • Assist non-destructive examination (NDE) personnel with various assessment methods

Required Skills/Qualifications:
  • Ability to work in a hands-on environment and motivation to learn through hands-on experience
  • Ability to safely operate basic tools and equipment (saws, hand-tools, grinders, etc.)
  • Ability to maintain organization of ongoing project work with occasional to frequent multi-tasking
  • Attention to detail and appreciation for providing a high quality work product

Desired Skills/Qualifications:
  • 2-year degree or coursework towards a technical degree related to mechanical or materials engineering
  • Welding experience or related materials experience is a plus, but is not required
  • Prior experience in a laboratory environment is a plus, but is not required
