CITY OF PARLIER

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR GRADE I

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I - This is the entry level journey person class in the wastewater treatment plant series for employees who possess a Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate. Incumbents work under the general supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor and perform most operation work. Employees in this class may be promoted to Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II upon obtaining a II Certificate.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Operate wastewater treatment facilities to control flow and processing of wastewater, sludge and effluent; monitor gauges, meters and control panels; observe variation in operating conditions, interpreting meter and gauge readings and test results to determine processing requirements.

Operate valves and gates; start and stop pumps, engines and electric motors to control and adjust flow and treatment processes; perform routine maintenance work on valves, tanks, related equipment and facilities.

Conduct inspections of wastewater treatment plant and pump station equipment according to established procedures and schedules; check pumps, motors, generators, and other equipment for proper operation.

Read, record, and calculate readings of meters and gauges; interpret information into operational characteristics; change flow meter charts; make process adjustments according to information gathered, samples taken, readings, and records.

Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and cleaning of dry/wet wells, tanks, pump s, valves, and other equipment.

Adjust and monitor the addition of chemicals to wastewater treatment processes; make routine tests of effluent.

Remove blockages; replace worn parts; remove parts to be machined by outside vendors; reassemble equipment.

Paint equipment and buildings; sweep and wash floors, walls, and paved areas; kill and remove weeds; trim plants; pick up debris; water and maintain landscaped areas.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I

In addition to the qualifications for Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee:

Knowledge of:

Operating characteristics of mechanical and electrical systems.

Operational characteristics of specialized wastewater treatment equipment and disposal systems.

Materials, methods, and practices used in the operation of wastewater treatment facilities and equipment.

Safe work practices around gases, electricity, and chemicals.

Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary m wastewater treatment plant operations.

Skill to:

Operate a wide variety of equipment and tools used in wastewater treatment plant and pump station operation in a safe and effective manner.

Ability to:

 

 

Read meters and gauges correctly and to act quickly and competently. Collect samples and perform routine laboratory tests.

Make accurate inspections of operating equipment, assess the condition of wastewater from visual inspection , and identify problems. ·

Perform wastewater treatment plant operations work with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

One year of experience as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainee.

Training:

Equivalent to a high school diploma.

License or Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Possession of a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade I Certificate issued by the California Water Pollution Control Association.

Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and wo,* environment:

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, push, pull, lift 75 lbs., distinguish color, and wear protective apparel; exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, toxic substances, foul odors, wastewater, sludge, effluents, bacteria, viruses, and traffic hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for shift work, on-call, stand-by, and emergency call.
