Music Director/Pianist and Pianist

 

OBJECTIVE:

 

To lead the Chancel Choir.  Plan and direct with the minister’s approval, the overall ministry of Music.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

•          Be a person of good moral character, congenial, and willing to cooperate with those to whom are responsible, co-workers, church members, and the general public. Be a person who easily meets and interacts with people of all ages and temperaments.

•          Be at least 18 years of age, resourceful, creative, dependable, and able to work effectively with a minimum of supervision.

•          Have the necessary skills to teach selected music to both trained and untrained voices of the Chancel Choir and other choral groups of the church.

•          Background checks are required.

 

AUTHORITY:

 

1.         The Music Director/Pianist is a lay employee of the church, working in a salaried employee status, and therefore approved for employment by the Staff-Parish Relations committee.

2.         The Music Director/Pianist is a member of the professional staff and is expected to participate in the "team ministry" concept in order to provide the best possible leadership of the music ministry. This concept of ministry means that each person will serve as a compliment to others to provide coordinated and responsible leadership in a Christian spirit.

3.     The Music Director/Pianist is responsible to the Minister to discharge the duties assigned. The Director will work in concert with other music ministries of the church who may provide worship music at other services and times. The Director is specifically responsible for the musical portion of the 10 a.m.Sunday service.

4.         There are other musical elements of other worship services such as periodical Sunday evening services; special Christian seasonal performances and Cantatas; and other services that may be led by volunteers. The Music Director/Pianist will coordinate the necessary rehearsal places, dates, and times with all musical elements of the church with the goal of quality musical support.

5.     The Music Director/Pianist in cooperation with all other musical leaders will work with the Minister to lift all musical offerings to God's glory.

 

BENEFITS:

 

1.     The Music Director/Pianist's benefits include two (2) weeks of paid vacation annually, after the first 6 months of employment. Time off must be with the minister and the SPRC Chairperson’s approval. Vacation time should be scheduled in advance so as not to interfere with major church events.

 

 

2.     The Music Director/Pianist shall earn sick leave at the rate of five (5) days per year. These days are for illness and may accumulate to the amount of twenty (20) days. These days have no monetary value in case of termination of employment by the person or employer.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:

 

•          The Music Director/Pianist will schedule all Chancel Choir rehearsals.

•          The Music Director/Pianist is allowed two (2) Sundays and two (2) Wednesdays (Rehearsals) off, per year, with pay. Additional time off, without pay, must be approved by the Minister or the SPRC Chairperson. Special music should be arranged for all scheduled absences.

•          The Music Director/Pianist should attend staff meetings as required by the minister.

 

DUTIES:

 

1.         Work with the Minister to enhance the theme of sermons, funerals, charge conferences, etc. Develop and support effective musical leadership in the church, along with the help of the Minister and the Worship Committee Chair.

2.     Approve all vocals, solos, and other music provided at the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Coordinate with the Minister as requested for funerals.

3.     Assist in specials music efforts by groups within the Church, if needed.

4.     Maintain church music and provide for the Choir, as needed (keeping within the annual budget). Submit annual budget requests for needed music and purchase within the budget required for both the Chancel Choir.

5.         Work with the Minister to select varied music and anthems.

6          Keep basic records of choir members, music usage, and supply promotional information to the church office and other media, when needed.

7.     Be a recruiter of new members for the Choir and oversee the work of and encourage the musical talent within the Church.

8.     Work closely with the Church Pianist/Organist to promote quality selections of music. Provide the pianist with hymns each week at choir rehearsal. Musical selections to be rehearsed should be given to the pianist in advance.  (At the present time, this position is one and the same as Music Director/Pianist.)

9.         With the Minister's approval, present two (2) special musical works annually, by the Chancel Choir (Easter and Christmas) and at least one special musical program with the Children’s Choir, if children's choir is in place.

10.       Provide Choral music for the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service, revivals, and other scheduled church events.

 

AT WILL EMPLOYMENT:

 

Employment and compensation with the First United Methodist Church of Havelock, are "at will", in that they can be terminated with or without cause, and with or without notice at any time, at the option of either the First United Methodist Church, or you, except as otherwise provided by law.
