The Early Childhood Special Education teacher provides an optimal learning environment for preschool aged learners (3-4 years old) who require the specialized teaching and supports designed for children with disabilities to increase the school readiness, behavioral, communication and social skills of the learners in their classroom. Early Childhood Special Education teachers in this position develop and implement district approved curriculum, document student progress through daily and weekly data collection to make data-based decisions about the effectiveness of teaching and behavioral strategies. Early Childhood Special Education teachers address students’ specific needs through multiple and diverse academic and behavioral supports or strategies and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Educational Planning
Excellent planning skills to meet Career and College Readiness Standards and the academic and behavioral needs outlined in each student's Individualized Education Program.
Highly collaborative with excellent documentation and organizational skills.
Develop weekly lesson plans and implements age-appropriate curriculum and creative themes to nurture and stimulate development.
Ensure lesson plans are complete and consist of the correct components as outlined in our curriculum; ensure lesson plans are submitted according to policy.
Adapt early childhood curriculum or implement behaviorally based interventions for the purpose of providing students with instructional activities to meet their educational needs.
Ability to develop and implement individualized instructional and behavior plans and behavioral management techniques.
Provide a developmentally appropriate classroom environment that reflects the children’s learning and growth.
Perform on-going developmental evaluations of children as required by program objectives, develop lesson plan, and follow curriculum implementation that addresses the individual needs of each child.
Plan, evaluate, and improve the physical environment in the classroom on an ongoing basis to meet the changing needs of the developing child.
Provide responsive care to all children by adapting daily care-giving routines and plans to the interests and needs of the individual child and the group.
Prepare developmental progress reports as needed.
Ensure that parent engagement activities are being implemented once per month, e.g. make a list and report activity to the Director.
Ensure that all classrooms are equipped with supplies needed to complete daily lessons; Identify supplies and other resources needed by the classroom.
Provide differentiated, direct instruction to students with emotional, behavioral, and/or intellectual challenges.
Develop lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and group instruction to meet each student's needs as stated in their Individualized Education Program.
Interpret both informal and classroom-based assessments for instructional decisions.
Collect data on student performance to improve student outcomes and direct instruction.
Administer and interpret formal assessments as appropriate.
Serve as a member of the school Individualized Education Program Team.
Participate in educational planning and develop student Individualized Education Programs using the Maryland Online web-based program.
Work collaboratively with team members to effectively implement student Individualized Education Programs.
Consult with supervisors regarding materials, equipment, and instructional strategies appropriate for students with disabilities.
Provide guidance and direction along with planning daily activities for the assigned Program.
Ensure that classroom staff adheres to all policies, practices, and expectations for a professional learning environment.
Attend and actively participate in staff/faculty meetings, interdisciplinary meetings, planning conferences, in-service training programs, etc.
Maintain professional competence by participating in one after-school workshop per quarter.
Use electronic tools for grade reporting, attendance (e.g., Jupiter Grades), leave reporting (e.g., ADP), and IEP documentation (e.g., Maryland Online).
Observe and assess student behavior to establish and maintain discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning.
Communicate with students when academic and behavioral problems arise.
Demonstrate knowledge of students' Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) and consistently implement Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIP).
Establish and maintain a safe physical environment conducive to learning.
Plan and execute enrichment experiences such as field trips.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Certified by the Maryland State Department of Education in special education, or in the process of having an application for provisional certification reviewed.
For those with a provisional certificate:
Enrolled in an educator preparation program and provide verification of enrollment.
Complete a minimum of 6 semester hours of coursework each year toward the professional certificate.
Provide Praxis I (composite or core) and Praxis II scores.
Drug screen and background check required.
