MATH DIRECTOR (MD) About Atmosphere Academy Atmosphere Academy is a SUNY-approved charter school that currently serves Bronx students and families in grades 6 through 12. Atmosphere's mission is to provide an "atmosphere" for learning in which students and teachers realize their potential as collaborative leaders. To realize this goal, Atmosphere has developed a suite of robust academic and enrichment programming that is designed to develop students’ skills, knowledge, and character. Similarly, the school promotes a professional culture for its staff that focuses on being a learning organization. Director The Mathematics Director (MD) is the primary leader of the mathematics program at Atmosphere. The MD supports Atmosphere Officers in carrying out the academic program departmentally. The MD will develop all curriculum and supporting events and programming related to the content area. The MD will collect and analyze data to develop and lead instructional cycles, systems, and procedures to improve academic rigor, as well as teacher and student performance. As the leader of their department, the MD will research and propose the use of academic resources and organize the requisite development to fully adopt the product. The Mathematics Director is responsible for the hiring, development, and evaluation of all teachers in the department. Atmosphere school leaders support teachers and staff in developing their instructional and professional practice by promoting a focus on continuous improvement that culminates in better student outcomes. Facilitating coaching, teaming, and professional development opportunities are key components of the school leaders’ responsibilities. Moreover, observation and evaluation are approached as shared processes with an emphasis on collaboration, self-reflection, and mutual accountability. The Director will be supported by department leaders (middle school and high school as we expand) whose primary focus is to conduct observations, coaching sessions and support the teacher evaluations. The departmental leaders will support the Director in developing and facilitating professional development. Collaboration with other department Directors and chairpersons is expected to develop common approaches and supports. Directors are required to work 50 hours per week and are not granted flex time. However, Directors do have the added perk of comp time and can work with their supervisor(s) to create work schedules that meet their personal and professional needs (with some weeks or days where the Director takes needed time and then exceeds the hourly expectation or obligation on another day or week). Organizational Leadership Duties Use data to determine a need, propose and implement policies, procedures, handbooks in collaboration with other content area Directors, Officers and other leaders. Build and maintain partnerships and external relations in your core area and beyond Collaborate on planning, implementing, managing, and auditing projects, programs, and people. Contribute as a member of the School Leadership Team, helping to make key organizational decisions and chart the future direction of the school in coordination with Board policies. Utilize strategic vision and detailed planning to develop and build a strong instructional program. Make data-driven decisions and identify resources to support problem-solving, evaluate programs and implement school initiatives and short/long term plans. Supervision Duties Developing all members of the department. Leading (in collaboration with various other school leaders and department chairpersons) the completion of all math department evaluations through the school’s custom evaluation procedure Developing math department leaders around all job duties, which includes: Check-in meetings and conferences Development of leadership persona Developing an Individual Goal and providing coaching to support that goal. Review of data reports on student and teacher proficiency Observation of teacher coaching sessions Review of items maintained by the leaders to evaluate and develop teachers: logs, coaching notes, effectiveness scores, and portfolios observation reports lesson plan comments assessment reviews including student work Individual Goals and coaching plans data dives identifying teacher's needs for improvement, document progress and interventions, and recommend TIPs or further action Management of teacher use of and communication around PTO in a way that advocates for student learning, while empathetically supporting the needs of the staff, including, advanced notice of absences, evidence of emergencies, calendar entries, absentee plans, and accurate documentation in the teacher’s log and Employee Database. Creating leaders portfolios, SOY, MOY, EOY evaluations through the use of narratives, ratings, and artifacts (derived from the review process outlined above). Cultivating high-quality instruction by conducting mini, informal, and formal observations using the AAPCS Teacher Evaluation Rubrics & Forms Completion of formal and informal observations each quarter as prescribed by the annual Evaluation Process document in tandem with the chairperson. Collecting evidence in the form of video, pictures, data, narratives and other artifacts to illustrate teacher performance Supporting the creation of teacher portfolios, SOY, MOY, EOY evaluations through the use of narratives, ratings, and artifacts (mentioned above) Facilitation of the creation of chairperson and teacher effectiveness scores, analyzing goal data and determining performance-based bonuses Suggesting professional development opportunities for the mathematics department members that are either presented by Atmosphere or independently identified Maintain Key Performance Indicator (KPI) data Curriculum and Instruction Duties Taking proactive ownership, utilizing strategic vision and detailed planning to develop and build a strong instructional program. The Math Director must make data driven decisions and identify resources to support problem solving, evaluate programs and implement school initiatives and short/long term plans. Ensuring co-planning is complete in a productive and timely basis with sustainable and enriching co-planning relationships Promoting and monitoring for fidelity to and utilization of key instructional models and strategies Facilitating the implementation of instructional cycles Creating or revising curriculum maps, scope and sequences, and other key curricular documents in close collaboration with other school leaders, the department team, and/or other departments as needed Managing curriculum materials and instructional resources, including; texts, web-based resources, manipulatives and equipment. Managing the creation of unit packets by curating quality materials, sharing exemplar packets and training teachers to develop their own. Researching and proposing purchases Developing an implementation plan for use, including training if needed. Evaluating value and impact of resource to determine future use Maintaining an inventory of existing items Coordinating approved purchases with the Operations Officer Lead innovation in the content area and developing creative new ideas that drive the organization forward into the future. Enhancing our student experience in their content area beyond the classroom Finding resources,events, or programs (ex: math Olympics club). Determining if that program is a good fit for Atmosphere Creating an implementation plan including a budget and staffing plan Piloting the implementation to successfully initiate the resource/program/event. Evaluate the resource/program/event for continued use Report on your content area to the board once per year or when called upon for a specific topic related to your program.
