Special education teachers work with students who have physical, mental, emotional, or learning disabilities. They develop individualized education programs (IEPs) for each student, which address their unique strengths and challenges. As a Special Education Teacher, you will work with students with a wide range of learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. Your goal will be to help your students overcome learning barriers and maximize their ability to learn and thrive in school.

Your students will vary in age from grades K-3, as determined by the school district. Their challenges may range from mild-moderate to severe-profound and the level of intervention they require will be determined on a case-by-case basis, according to the parameters outlined in their individual education plans (IEP).

Responsibilities:

· Instruction and Planning:

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that accommodate varying learning styles and abilities.
  • Modify curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and technology to enhance learning.

· Individualized Education Plans (IEPs):

  • Create, review, and update IEPs in collaboration with parents, school staff, and other professionals.
  • Set realistic and measurable goals for students based on their individual needs and abilities.
  • Monitor and document student progress towards IEP goals, adjusting strategies as necessary.

· Classroom Management:

  • Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Implement behavior management plans and strategies to address and support positive student behavior.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students in the classroom.

· Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with staff to co-teach and support inclusion in mainstream classrooms.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, IEP goals, and any concerns.
  • Participate in professional development and team meetings to stay current with best practices in special education.

Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Conduct formal and informal assessments to identify student needs and measure progress.
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction and make necessary adjustments to teaching methods.

Qualifications:

  • Valid CA State Special Education Teaching Certifications in level R3MM (Level 1 Mild to Moderate) or R3MS (Level 2 Moderate to Severe).
  • Ability to work with a team and have objectivity and openness to others views
  • Excellent verbal and oral communication skills
  • Ability to accept and apply feedback to improve performance
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent attendance history and strong work ethic.
  • Experience in coordinating, writing, and implementing behavior intervention plans and IEPs.
  • Ensure compliance with laws requiring data-driven decisions.
