JOB SUMMARY: Southern Vitreoretinal Associates (SVA) Patient Financial Counselor, under general supervision of the Assistant Business Office Manager, offers financial advice related to services rendered by SVA, cost estimates and assistance to patients regarding their account. The Patient Financial Counselor is the liaison between patients, clinical staff and their insurance companies; often coordinating payments, managing payment plans, working towards reducing receivables and answering questions from multiple parties, ensuring the financial obligations are met so that patients and Physicians can focus on their health and eye care.

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties identified below are the essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Other duties may be assigned that align with the summary of this position.

  1. Responsible for monitoring upcoming appointments reviewing patient balances to ensure payments are collected for balance owed.
  2. Collaborate and notify front desk staff when needed regarding incoming patients that have balances due to initiate time-of-service collection based on SVA policy.
  3. Work with patients when needed to discuss available financial aid/payments options so that patients can make an informed decision regarding their financial responsibility.
  4. Performs transfers and adjustments of monies as needed to the appropriate account(s) and/or balance(s) to ensure that accounts are credited appropriately.
  5. Verify patient demographics, employment and related information relating to the accounts that have patient responsibility ensuring that SVA has the current information for a patient, allowing the proper management of their account.
  6. Verify patient health insurance benefits, conditions and requirements by the patient’s insurance, informing the patient of their insurance coverage and allowing SVA and the patient to make appropriate choices.
  7. Assist the patients who may qualify with obtaining financial assistance (Care Credit) in order to meet their financial obligations to SVA.
  8. Collect estimated responsibility from patients, reducing collection costs and performing to best practice standards.
  9. Implement payment arrangements with patients when needed, assisting patient in meeting their financial responsibility and collecting reimbursement due to SVA.
  10. Review and validate patient credits in order to process refunds that are due to patients.
  11. Responsible for contacting patients when a payment is returned from the bank for various reasons. Contact patient for an alternate payment method.
  12. Responsible for patient statements and collection letters as directed in SVA’s collection policies, providing patients with an accurate statement of financial responsibility that is due SVA.
  13. Check probate court for patients who are deceased, filing appropriate paperwork as needed, so SVA may obtain reimbursement due for services rendered.
  14. Serve as the liaison with the outside collection agency, monitoring the status of accounts placed with them, ensuring maximum collections are received.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Well organized and detail oriented.
  3. Working knowledge/experience with EHR/medical billing software.
  4. Understanding of private insurance rules and regulations.
