We are currently looking for Direct Care Counselors on a full and/or part-time basis for their Needham campus. Direct Care Counselors act as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team in a residential and school program for children with severe emotional and behavioral difficulties. The Counselor will focus on social, recreational, and behavioral needs of children as well as ensure that the physical and emotional needs of children are being met daily.


Essential Functions for this position include:

  • Plan and implement social and recreational activities for children.
  • Work as a part of a multidisciplinary team to further the emotional, behavioral, and educational development of children.
  • Actively participate in supervision and professional development opportunities offered at Walker.
  • Provide a therapeutic milieu environment for children, maintaining a safe and healthy environment; and meeting the physical needs of children.
  • Implement treatment protocol established in children’s treatment plans, IEPs, and individual crisis management plans.
  • Properly attend to administrative functions of childcare, including attending required meetings; completing assigned oral and written report writing tasks.
  • Directly supervise children.
  • Apply the program’s model of childcare, including therapeutic crisis intervention methods, and physical restraint.
  • Administer medication in accordance with the policy and procedures.
  • Must be receptive and responsive to supervision and professional development.
  • Ability to be flexible and work collaboratively.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies quickly and safely.
  • Ability to work in a stressful and fast paced environment.
  • Must be able to understand and apply principles taught in training's and seminars to the milieu, including therapeutic crisis intervention skills.
  • Must be able to participate in activities with children.
  • Ability to work and stand for extended periods
  • May require bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting
  • Requires the ability to perform therapeutic physical intervention.

Qualifications: Associate's degree or equivalent experience is preferred; previous experience working in a similar setting is a plus; valid driver’s license preferred.

*Must be able to commit to 2 week paid 9am-5pm orientation or 2 weekend orientations
