Position Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated Shelter Advocate to join our compassionate team. The ideal candidate will possess a combination of empathy, organizational skills, and the ability to navigate through chaotic situations with resilience. As a Shelter Advocate, you will play a crucial role in providing support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, ensuring their safety, and assisting them on their journey towards healing and independence.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide crisis intervention and emotional support to shelter residents in a compassionate and nonjudgmental manner.
  • Coordinate and facilitate support groups, workshops, and educational sessions on topics related to domestic violence, self-care, and empowerment.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including case notes, progress reports, and documentation of services provided.
  • Assist with daily shelter operations, including meal preparation, cleaning, and ensuring the safety and security of the facility.
  • Uphold and enforce shelter policies and procedures while maintaining strong boundaries with clients.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in the field of domestic violence advocacy.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working with survivors of domestic violence/sexual abuse or in a crisis intervention setting is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and composed during crisis situations, with a commitment to self-care and stress management.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and a deep understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence & sexual abuse.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with case management software is a plus.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
