The HTA is designed to improve Los Angeles' tourism and hospitality industry by increasing the skill level of its workforce and moving workers up the career ladder. Before the pandemic, the hospitality industry was one of the largest growing sectors in Southern California, with a projected growth rate higher than all other jobs in the region, and the nation. JOB SUMMARY:
We are looking for a highly experienced barista professional with a passion for coffee and a very solid knowledge of coffee varietals, cultivation and processing, brewing and extraction methods, beverage preparation and latte art techniques, basic mathematics and customer service, coupled with a strong ability to teach and mentor beginning students. As a Barista Instructor, you will help further develop and teach lectures and hands-on training sessions for a U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeship training program that will ensure HTA’s graduates have the knowledge and technical skills to work in a wide variety of coffee shops while providing exceptional customer service.
In addition, you will be responsible for staying up-to-date with industry trends and innovations, and helping to incorporate new techniques and knowledge into our training programs. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong attention to detail and the ability to timely complete assigned tasks. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach solid, rigorous classes for apprentices looking to be professional baristas and latte artists. All students are encouraged to participate fully. Proper techniques are taught in fine detail.
- Follow the teaching style and class plans previously developed by the program. You'll be free to help create an interesting, inviting, and supportive classroom environment using all your experience and teaching skills, that will help our students be successful.
- Help to evaluate the effectiveness of our new training program and make recommendations for improvements to drive student and program success.
- Positively represent and promote the program in the community and with industry partners, using excellent verbal and written communication skills to let people know the high caliber of the program and our students. Barista Instructors model excellent, professional work ethic. All students and colleagues are treated with care and respect.
- Arrive at your classroom early enough to allow for a smooth and successful class.
- Deliver and facilitate classroom and hands-on training and testing to new baristas on coffee history and worldwide growing regions and climate; coffee varietals, harvesting and processing methods and coffee quality; roasting; SCA cupping protocol and sensory analysis; brewing methods and devices; water quality; dialing-in coffee extraction through proper grind calibration, dosing, temperature, tamping and ratios; and all other knowledge and skills required to become top-notch baristas and latte artists so they can obtain and maintain their first jobs in the coffee industry.
- Model professional behavior to supervise and motivate your team and the students, helping ensure a sanitary, safe, effective, positive, polite and inclusive learning environment for our students who come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
- Ensure that all students follow classroom protocol, learn to work well in their teams, and grow and thrive on their path towards becoming professional baristas.
- Ensure that food and supplies are ordered on time.
- Assisting during clean-up as necessary to ensure the class finishes on time.
- Maintain training records, student grades and documentation and follow HTA’s privacy protocols.
- Participate in staff meetings and contribute to team goals.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advise the Director of Food and Beverage Training on incorporating new techniques into the program.
- Provide ongoing feedback, support and mentorship to our barista students and graduates.
- Assist the Business Solutions Manager in placing barista graduates in jobs with HTA’s employer partners.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated ability to dial-in and program equipment to achieve an excellent espresso.
- Excellent at latte art with an ability to teach students latte art techniques.
- Deep knowledge of coffee bean growing regions and varietals, brewing methods, and equipment.
- Proficiency in computer skills and with Microsoft Office Suite to create and update training materials and resources.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Positive, adaptable attitude and strong work ethic.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and coaching to HTA students and graduates.
