CBO MEDICAL CODER

This position is responsible for reviewing, interpreting, and documenting information from the medical record and assigning correct code(s) utilizing CPT and ICD-10 diagnosis codes for physician services. Assists Professional Billing clients to organize and perform chart documentation audits as requested, and helps handle coding review requests for Billing and Collection activities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Review and abstract medical record information; assign appropriate CPT code(s) and diagnosis codes according to current industry standards
  • Ensure that all Coder Review requests are reviewed, and completed with accuracy and according to departmental time frames
  • Serve as a coding resource to the providers, departments and billing/collection staff; provide feedback regarding documentation requirements for correct coding
  • Assist with chart audit functions as directed by Central Billing Office (CBO) management
  • Perform accurate reconciliation of charges submitted to the CBO to ensure that all charges are received and coded within the department standard time frame
  • Prepare daily physician charges and submit them electronically
  • Accurately code and prepare charge entries daily
  • Knowledge of appropriate payer billing requirements (especially Medicare Part B) to ensure timely payment of claims
  • Provide telephone support and processing to patients as relates to billing matters.
  • Responsible for maintaining the highest level of billing standards following current guidelines from Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance entities
  • Perform other duties related to the functions of the CBO as assigned
  • Work collaboratively with other departments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a High School diploma, GED, Certificate of Completion or equivalent achievement
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a Medical Coder role in multispecialty physician setting; preferably gastroenterology
  • CPC (Certified Professional Coder), or CCA (Certified Coding Associate), or CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist Physician)
  • Strong computer skills, including intermediate knowledge and ability to work with Microsoft Excel
  • Exceptional communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Ability to read, understand, and use CPT and ICD-10 codes and adhere to Medicare guidelines and compliance
  • Superior organizational skill, attention to detail, ability to work without micro-management
  • Working knowledge of basic coding, CPT, ICD-10, and Modifier application.
  • Medical terminology.
  • Experience in using electronic health record software, eligibility, and electronic billing
  • Associates degree or equivalent experience. Must be AAPC or HIM Certified
  • Strong ability to work independently
  • Must use appropriate grammar and have the ability to articulate chart assessment or utilization review in writing
