Job DescriptionJob Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.     Maintains a caseload under the supervision of a Staff or Supervising Attorney, as assigned.

2.     Receives, screens, and refers telephone and in-person clients at LAD offices and outreach sites, as directed.

3.     Prepares written reports, briefs, and summaries of investigations, under the direction of the Supervising Attorney.

4.     Research legal issues under the direction of the Managing or Supervising Attorney.

5.     Drafts pleadings and other documents from a Staff Attorney’s notes and/or client interviews for the review and approval of a Staff Attorney.

6.     Represents clients in administrative proceedings, under the supervision of Staff or Supervising Attorney.

7.     Files pleadings with the courts.

8.     Reviews court files, maintains contact with clients and the courts regarding court dates and other routine functions.

9.     Communicates with legal, medical, vocational, administrative, community, and other agencies.

10.  Collect and provide resource referrals.

11.  Follows LAD and law group policies and procedures.

The Paralegal will follow instructions and perform the above and other duties and responsibilities, as requested by the Managing or Supervising Attorney. The Paralegal will perform the job functions in an efficient and timely manner.


Essential Job Functions:

1.     Ability to maintain presence in office on a regular basis with good attendance and punctuality.

2.     Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

3.     Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

4.     Must be bondable.

 Education:

Graduation from paralegal schools, or equivalent experience.

 Experience:

1.     Knowledge of court procedures and legal documents

2.     Knowledge of state and federal public benefits programs, law, guidelines, and procedures, rules of conduct and Administrative Tribunal processes.

3.     Knowledge of medical termination or basic anatomy (Public Benefits).

4.     Excellent oral and verbal communication skills.

5.     Excellent spelling, grammar, and mathematical skills.

6.     Ability to research legal issues, using legal research online tools.

7.     Ability to work with legal staff, management, and clients.

8.     Ability to maintain case files in accordance with law group and funding source policies and procedures.

9.     Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

10.  Desirable: Fluency in foreign language(s).

11.  Knowledge of LAD and community resources.
