Job DescriptionJob Description

The Laboratory Director is responsible for the operational aspects of the laboratory, activities
performed in the laboratory, and laboratory employees. The Laboratory Director will play a key
role in setting up the laboratory. This person must be comfortable with start-up mode and be a
solutions-driven individual.

Minimum Qualifications
Per the Bureau of Cannabis Control, the Laboratory Director must, at a minimum, meet the
following qualifications:
 PhD in a chemical or biological science from an accredited college or university
 MS in a chemical or biological science from an accredited college or university
o 4 years of full-time practical experience in a post-education laboratory performing
analytical scientific testing in which the testing methods are or were recognized
by a laboratory-accrediting body; or
 BS in a chemical or biological science from an accredited college or university
o 7 years of full-time, post-education practical experience in a laboratory
performing analytical scientific testing in which the testing methods are or were
recognized by a laboratory-accrediting body.

The Laboratory Director must have the following practical experience:
 Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
 Experience operating and troubleshooting a wide variety of analytical instrumentation
including at least 3 of the following:
o HPLC/DAD
o LC/MS/MS
o GC/FID
o ICP-MS
o GC/MS
o qPCR
 Experience managing and mentoring junior scientists
 Experience with method development and method validation
 Practical experience in a regulated laboratory (GLP, ISO 17025, etc)
 Strong critical thinking skills
 Experience with LIMS is a plus
 Experience with a Document Management System is a plus

Responsibilities
 Assist in all aspects of setting up the laboratory
o Organize and schedule instrument installations
o Assist in workflow organization
o Unpack and organize supplies
 Interview and recruit scientists
 Lead method development and validation efforts
 Develop and implement standard operating procedures
 Implementation and maintenance of Laboratory Quality Assurance Program including:
o Proficiency Testing Program
o Corrective Actions Preventative Actions Program
o ISO 17025 Accreditation and maintenance
 Direct scientific activities of the laboratory
 Ensure ISO 17025 practices are followed at all times
 Ensure that laboratory employees have appropriate qualifications and training to perform
tests for which the laboratory is certified for
 Ensure that the facility has adequate space, equipment, materials and controls to
perform each test
 Ensure all laboratory employees are adequately trained to perform their assignments
 Ensure that all safety concerns and hazards in the laboratory are promptly addressed
 Supervise all laboratory personnel
 Sign off and approve data for release
 Answer technical inquiries from customers

Physical Demands
 The Laboratory Director must be able to move about the laboratory.
 This position requires the ability to lift up to 50lbs.
