Under the direction of the Compliance Officer, the Benefit Specialist, Compliance will assist in the coordination and implementation of Compliance Programs for the organization, in monitoring business activities for compliance when regulatory changes occur, offer support to various departments to ensure understanding and compliance with regulations, and assist in developing strategies and documentation to ensure overall organizational compliance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Knowledge of plan and regulatory compliance issues arising under various laws affecting the benefit plans and programs, including but not limited to the Internal Revenue Code, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), Department of Labor (DOL), the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  2. Assist in the handling of HIPAA and privacy breaches including reporting and corrective action plans.
  3. Collaborate with the Fund office departments to ensure all policies are followed in compliance with plan requirements.
  4. Maintain comprehensive, organized records of all compliance activities.
  5. Actively monitor and analyze statutes, regulations, and litigation for changing benefits legal requirements, and initiate appropriate action or changes in coordination with plan professionals.
  6. Assist with Appeals and coordinate with departmental staff to ensure all Pension and Benefit plan appeals are handled according to plan regulations.
  7. Assist with the development and maintenance of a compliance dashboard that provides compliance status summaries and tracking tools.
  8. Track and respond to subpoenas related to both Pension and Benefit Funds.
  9. Discuss and disseminate written information to Participants, Non-Participants and attorneys.
  10. Ensure the department maintains up-to-date knowledge of plan documents, summaries of plan provisions, and other plan materials, while also maintaining comprehensive and well-organized records of all compliance activities.
  11. Actively identify opportunities and support efforts to influence a culture of compliance.
  12. Provide general compliance oversight and lead project teams as needed to coordinate and successfully complete special project assignments.
  13. Effective utilization of resources to assist in active research when needed.
  14. Provide guidance and feedback to business units on process improvements.
  15. Build, foster and maintain collaborative and professional relationships with internal and external representatives to ensure a spirit of cooperation and teamwork.
  16. Participate in the development of the Compliance team’s risk assessment, work plan, and ongoing monitoring of policies, procedures, processes and risks related to the organization.
  17. Comply with the policies of the Fund office, as set forth in the Employee Handbook.
  18. Abides by organizational and HIPAA guidelines, privacy practices, and confidentiality.
  19. Regular and consistent attendance.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required in healthcare, business administration or related field, or a combination of education and experience.
  • CEBS certification preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Simultaneously manages multiple priorities and follows through.
  • Ability to work independently and solve complex problems.
  • Contract interpretation.
  • Demonstrates skills in the areas of problem solving, organizational, analytical, and critical thinking.
  • Taft-Hartley plan knowledge preferred.
  • Computer skills in MS Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook and Teams required.
