Mechanical Engineer I

This is a product design and development position designing and providing support of highly sophisticated and reliable communications infrastructure products for professional and mission critical markets. Engineers in this position will function primarily as a mechanical engineer supporting quality issues, and cost or process improvements of existing product lines, but may also contribute to larger team projects and new product development.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Identifying and or executing cost reductions of part designs and existing products.
• Supporting part change requests and quality issues identified by vendors.
• Supporting factory quality and process issues and providing feedback to resolve.
• Working with suppliers and commodity teams to meet cost and lead-time goals for tooling and piece parts.
• Setting up and maintaining bills of materials and releasing mechanical prints.
• Performing mechanical verification tests per product specifications and writing test reports.
• Preparing concept and prototype designs of mechanical systems as well as hands on design and analysis of individual parts and components.
• Modeling complex component and assembly designs using advanced 3D CAD tools, and interpreting and generating 2D drawings per mechanical drafting standards.
• Understanding and analysis of tolerances and effects on design.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Hands-on experience with 3D modeling and surfacing software, Creo Parametric (Pro/Engineer) or equivalent, to design components and assemblies.
Familiarity and understanding of design and manufacturing of parts such as:
• Die casting.
• Machining
• sheet metal and stampings.
• plastic injection molding
• compression molded rubber
• connectors, cables, and printed circuit board assemblies.

REQUIREMENTS
• Degree required: Bachelor's in mechanical engineering or related field.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Quick learner
• Strong comprehension skills.

DESIRED SKILLS:
• Ability to work with other engineers within mechanical and other disciplines (electrical engineering, procurement, manufacturing, etc).
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
• Generates concise and comprehensive design and test report documents.
• Summarizes complex technical concepts clearly.

Will there be any lifting? If so, how many pounds? There may be occasional lifting or prototypes for testing or lab support. 40 pounds maximum alone. If candidate cant lift is not a deal breaker.

Does this position require safety-sensitive functions - Hiring Manager should check with HR if they are not sure. No specific safety certifications required. Candidate may need to take a basic safety course for lab safety.

How long will the training be for this resource before they are expected to work independently: Working independently is a key criteria. We have documentation on our tools and processes and peers for the person to get help from. Expectation is that the person should pick up the core aspects of our part release process within a few weeks to a month.

Interview Information (How many interviews, type of interviews and any interview arrival instructions for onsite and if google meet do they require the candidates need to have camera on: 1st interview phone interview with HM, second interview video interview (camera not required but preferred) with HM and team lead 45 minutes. Both interviews will run 45 minutes roughly.

Whats your departments function within the company? The RF Site Hardware team is an organization within the Products and Solutions group of  Solutions. Our team is responsible for developing and maintaining sophisticated and highly reliable communications, infrastructure, and networking products for Mission Critical and commercial communication products across a variety of global markets and standards. The RF Site Hardware Engineering team develops state of the art Digital, RF, Mechanical and Power Supply solutions to meet our customers needs.

Whats the structure of your current team and who will your new hire report to? HM has a team of 5 mechanical engineers and 1 PCB designer. This candidate would report to HM directly and may meet with a technical staff member weekly for coaching and mentoring.

What are the main responsibilities that your new hire will have?

-Preparing concept and prototype designs of mechanical systems as well as hands on design and analysis of individual parts and components, that meets customer requirements and expectations, reliability and robustness requirements, manufacturing processes and safety guidelines.
-Modeling complex component and assembly designs using advanced 3D CAD tools and interpreting and generating 2D drawings per mechanical drafting standards.
-Designing and conducting experiments using statistical tools and techniques to confirm analyses, evaluating new or existing designs to conform to product specifications.
-Understanding and analysis of tolerances and effects on design.
-Working with suppliers and commodity teams to meet cost and lead-time goals for tooling and piece parts.

What are the top three contributions this new hire will make to the company within their first 90 or 120 days?
This candidate would be part of the team working on one or more critical projects. Aiding with part design, release, and qualification to ensure the team is ready for production pilot mid next year.

What qualifications are must-haves for candidates? (e.g. X technical skills, experience with Y projects, Z certification or license)
Previous experience with 3D design of parts and assemblies
Must have 2-3 years of experience with PTC Creo.
Must under basic of designing
Understanding of tolerances, drawing dimensioning schemes, tolerance analysis.
Understanding of Bill of Materials and assembly specifications.
Works autonomously but able to work effectively with other engineers within mechanical and other disciplines (electrical engineering, procurement, manufacturing, etc).
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.

What would be some nice-to-have skills for candidates and why? (e.g. experience in retail, familiarity with X programming language)
Previous experience with PCB assembly processes and techniques.
Previous experience designing sheet metal, die castings and cable assemblies is preferred.
Familiarity with statistical tolerance analysis.
Familiarity with Oracle Agile PLM.
Ability to perform hand or FEA calculations for stress and thermal. Demonstrated experience in Finite Element Analysis for structural and heat transfer applications highly desirable.
Use of test equipment such as thermal imaging, thermal scanners, air flow analysis and strain gauge tools.

Is it necessary for candidates to have industry experience for this role? Why or why not? No experience in our direct industry is required. General design understanding of the various part types is sufficient.
