Substance Use Disorder Counselor

At the heart of our commitment is the provision of Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs), designed for those experiencing moderate to severe mental health symptoms requiring a more focused approach than standard outpatient services.
Purpose: The SUD Counselor will play a pivotal role in providing comprehensive and compassionate care to individuals struggling with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Through evidence-based treatment, therapeutic interventions, and support, the SUD Counselor plays a vital role in empowering clients on their journey to recovery. By conducting assessments, developing individualized treatment plans, and facilitating counseling sessions, the SUD Counselor aims to address clients' unique needs, enhance their coping skills, and promote long-term wellness.
Essential Functions:
Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate clients' substance use history, mental health status, and treatment needs.
Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients, incorporating evidence-based practices and client-centered approaches.
Provide individual and group counseling sessions to address substance use issues, co-occurring disorders, and related challenges.
Offer education and support to clients and their families regarding addiction, recovery, coping skills, and relapse prevention strategies.
Monitor clients' progress throughout treatment, regularly reviewing and adjusting treatment plans as necessary.
Collaborate with other members of the treatment team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and therapists, to ensure coordinated and holistic care.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of client assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and clinical supervision sessions to enhance professional development and ensure quality of care.
Stay informed about current trends, research findings, and best practices in the field of substance use disorders and mental health treatment.
Competencies:
Strong understanding of addiction, recovery principles, and evidence-based treatment modalities.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport, convey empathy, and facilitate therapeutic interactions.
Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity to the diverse needs and backgrounds of clients.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and maintain professional boundaries.
Proficiency in electronic health record systems and documentation practices.
Travel Requirements:
Located at the San Jose Clinic, travel to other clinics as needed.
Required education and experience:
Current licensure or certification as a Substance Use Disorder Counselor (e.g., Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor) preferred.
Experience providing counseling and support to individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
Physical Requirements:
Mobility: Ability to move around the office or treatment facility to conduct assessments, lead group therapy sessions, and interact with clients and colleagues.
Sitting and Standing: Capability to sit for extended periods during counseling sessions, documentation, and meetings, as well as the ability to stand when conducting group therapy sessions or interacting with clients.
Manual Dexterity: Proficiency in using a computer and other office equipment for documentation, email correspondence, and data entry.
Visual and Auditory Acuity: Adequate vision and hearing to observe client behavior, read documentation, and effectively communicate with clients and colleagues.
Emotional Resilience: Ability to manage one's emotional responses and maintain composure in challenging or emotionally charged situations.
