JOB DESCRIPTION:

The successful candidate will support all breeding programs at Plant Sciences Inc. by developing and deploying genetics and genomics tools in support of new cultivar development. The candidate will be responsible for building upon the molecular program by being well-versed in next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques, crop-specific SNP array technologies, and analysis of sequencing data to identify alleles for specific traits of interest for each breeding program. The candidate will have expertise in quantitative genetics and genomics for plant breeding with a clear understanding of the utilization of CRISPR/CAS9 gene editing technology to progress plant breeding programs. The genetics and genomics manager will be responsible for leading and developing a small team of scientists and technicians to support the projects involved for each breeding program. This position will also work with our biotechnology research partners in collaborative efforts aimed at developing novel plant varieties of strawberry, raspberry (red and black), blackberry, blueberry, and artichoke.

Responsibilities:

· Manage all sample submissions for whole genome sequencing, perform quality control for all sequencing data, and analyze sequencing data for allele identification in support of novel plant variety development.

· Use quantitative genetics and genomics to interpret sequencing data results and report all complex findings to breeders and stakeholders in a simple, actionable way.

· Lead the implementation of genomic selection (GS) for quantitative traits in collaboration with PSI breeders.

· Lead the discovery, development, and deployment of molecular markers linked to traits of interest.

· Meet with partners to advance projects and ensure goals will be met in a timely manner.

· Ensure resources are properly allocated to meet the timelines required for greenhouse, nursery, and fruiting field activities involving trait introgression.

· Work with all involved PSI personnel to coordinate schedules, understand planting, and harvest seasons for each program.

· Develop and execute scientific protocols required to achieve research and product commercialization goals.

· Obtain permits and follow regulations subject to inspections from state and federal agencies.

· Maintain the security of PSI’s confidential and proprietary information and intellectual property.

 

Qualifications:

· A PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Quantitative Genetics or related field is required with at least 2 years’ experience in genomics, bioinformatics, quantitative genetics, and biotechnology for plant breeding.

· Proven ability to manage multiple projects across multiple crops simultaneously.

· Excellent attention to detail with exceptional organization skills.

· Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

· Capable of working independently and in collaborative teams, with a positive solutions-oriented approach to problem solving and conflict resolution.

· Willingness to work in an office, lab, greenhouse, or field setting, with ability to travel, as necessary.

Compensation & Benefits:

The following is a general overview of the salary range and benefits. The actual compensation offer will be based on experience, skills, education, and other relevant factors.

Salary: $95,000.00 to $150,000.00 USD.
