Position Summary

OR Charge RN is responsible for the direction of patient care. Coordinates staff members in the operating room and Sterile Processing. Works collaboratively with physicians, Medical Director, PACU Charge RN, Clinical Director, and the Executive Director on all matters pertaining to center operations. Helps facilitate the successful interpretation of facility policies and procedures to ensure patients’ needs are met in addition to adherence of local, state, and federal regulations. Demonstrates and teaches team building and positive employee relationships. Performs job evaluations and interviewing along with orientation and employee education.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow all aspects of the job description of Registered Nurse.

Assessment

  • Assess staffing needs according to scheduled cases and patient needs and appropriate staff and skill mix.
  • Continuously assess progression of the daily schedule and adjust staffing assignments as needed to provide optimum patient care and productivity.
  • Assesses in-service/educational needs of staff and make recommendations.
  • Assist the Materials Manager with equipment and supply needs based on scheduled cases. Assist in evaluation of new equipment and supplies. Remain in compliance with contract purchasing to the extent that clinical conditions allow.
  • Monitors employee performance by giving verbal input to Clinical Director and writing chronological notes as required.
  • Assist staff in development of the Quality Improvement Program in the clinical area assigned. Coordinate collection of data and work collaboratively with Clinical Director and staff to interpret data; plan and implement techniques for improvement.
  • Communicate assessments to the Clinical Director in a timely manner.

Planning

  • Plan staffing according to identified needs and staffing pattern to meet physician needs and communicate schedule to staff in advance.
  • Plan in-service/education experiences for staff. Assist staff members in planning to meet identified educational needs and goal achievement.
  • Plan to ensure that needed equipment and supplies are available, in a timely manner, for scheduled cases.

Implementation

  • Make staffing assignments according to planned needs and available staff. Coordinate schedule and demonstrate flexibility when schedule or staffing availability changes. Arrange for provision of breaks and lunch for staff.
  • Develop and document in-service/education offerings for staff and physicians. Conduct regular education offering during monthly staff meeting.
  • Provide for needed equipment and supplies according to planned needs.
  • Assist Clinical Director in employee performance evaluations.
  • Monitor quality of patient care in units. Coordinate interventions and communicate outcomes to Administrator.
  • Act as a resource person to physicians, staff, orientees, students, and visitors.
  • Communicate significant information to Clinical Director in a timely manner. Complete written documentation as requested and/or per policy.
  • Facilitate decision-making and problem solving within the assigned unit.
  • In collaboration with the Clinical Director, facilitate achievement of unit goals which are in harmony with Goals and Objectives set by the Governing Board.
  • Responsible for operations of the assigned clinical units in the absence of the Clinical Director.

Evaluation

  • Perform in a manner which demonstrates accountability, utilizing sound decision-making skills and nursing judgment.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement Program activities including identification of aspects of care, collection and analysis of data, formulation of recommendations, implementation of an improvement plan, and evaluation of the process.

Additional

  • In keeping with the teamwork philosophy, acts as a resource person to other staff.
  • Adheres to OSHA guidelines for Universal Precautions for exposure to blood and body fluids, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Participates in the orientation of new employees, students, and approved program participants.
  • Attends Center staff and unit meetings, and educational opportunities.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in meeting the needs of the Center.
  • Follows AORN/ASPAN Recommended Practices and Center policy at all times.
  • Assists visitors, staff, and physicians utilizing good guest relations.
  • Ensure all work is compliant with all MiOrtho SC, HIPAA, and other applicable laws/policies/guidelines.
  • Work positively and professionally with all outside third party payors, vendors, patients, physician offices, and others to portray MiOrtho SC positively.
  • Prioritize job responsibilities to facilitate optimum patient care and utilization of resources.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in meeting the needs of the Center and the clinical units, including cross-training for all nursing functions and being flexible with shift times.
  • Maintain all required healthcare certifications. Perform effectively in an emergency.
  • Maintain current education in Infection Prevention.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, Licenses, and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.
  • Current Michigan license and BLS is required
  • ACLS and PALS certification is required within 6 months of hire.
  • Two years of progressive supervisory experience.
  • Experience as a registered nurse in an ambulatory surgery center or similar environment.
  • Background that demonstrates and ability to stay organized, taking initiative, delivering on priorities timely.
