Job DescriptionJob DescriptionHeartland Humane Society is looking for a seasoned vet tech to provide exceptional care to the shelter animals and community or owned pets as part of HHS services. This person will lead the medical program for all cats and dogs entering shelter care. Duties include well-check exams, communicating with contracted veterinarians, preparing for onsite surgeries, administering lab testing and diagnostics, vaccinating animals, managing inventory and ordering.
  • Perform wellness checks – report to veterinarians with any health concerns
  • Document all medical care of each patient, including reminders for any necessary follow-up care
  • Perform diagnostic tests and administer medications, vaccinations, treatments and anesthetic injections
  • Restrain animals for examination and treatment and use fear free techniques for handling
  • Prepare animals and instruments of surgery
  • Provide post-surgery medical exams
  • Lead kennel staff to care for animals
  • Educate adopters on home care needs of animals
  • Be available after hours to communicate with volunteers and foster homes assisting ill or injured shelter pets
  • Ensure all medical and surgical equipment is functional, including scheduling or performing routine maintenance
  • Assist as needed with cleaning duties in cat and dog kennel areas
