Job DescriptionJob Description

Cytopathology Interpretation
 Provides microscopic examination, evaluation, and Cyto-Diagnostic
interpretation of Cytology and Cell Block samples from Cytology patient
specimens for Pathologists.
 Screens slides for the adequacy and/or the presence of normal or abnormal
cellular changes, cancer, or infections.
 Interacts directly with Pathologists regarding Cyto-diagnostic
interpretation.
 Must complete minimum of 24 hours of CME per year.
 Specimen Processing
 Follows the laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing.
 Demonstrates the ability to accurately prioritize and triage specimens.
 Ensures appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling; maintains the
integrity of the specimen and patient identification.
 Performs accurate gross description and preparation of cytology specimens
according to the guidelines established.
 Performs accurate Cell block preparation for small/scant Anatomical
Surgical specimens.
 Handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste based on the
laboratory’s procedural manual, and ensures compliance with regulatory
agencies.
 Must keep cytology processing supplies ordered and filled in the Cytology
Processing Area.
 Demonstrates capability of identifying problems that may adversely affect
test performance or reporting of test results and must either correct the
problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor, Technical
Supervisor, or Laboratory Medical Director .
 Aides in identifying discrepancy prior to processing specimens.

Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality
control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance
performed daily, weekly, monthly and as needed.
 Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance duties as required.
Maintains all necessary documentation and current logs.
 Incorporate quality assessment into daily screening process and is
responsible for ensuring accurate records are maintained.
 Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the
laboratories established performance specifications.
 Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information concerning patients,
physicians, employees, clients, vendors, and the company.
 Reports all concerns of test quality and/or patient or employee safety to a
Supervisor or Safety Officer.
 Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
Maintains a clean work environment.
 Has a good understanding and working knowledge of Laboratory
Information Systems.
 Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects as
required.
 Accepts other duties as assigned Performs all related Quality Assurance
documentation task. Ensures accurate specimen processing/test results by
strict adherence to testing methodology and quality standards.

Qualifications:
Education, Certification/Licensure, and/or Experience:
 Bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, or chemical laboratory science
or related field required.
 CT (ASCP) certification required.
 Certified in Cytospin, ThinPrep and/or SurePath.
 Must meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA '88) criteria
to perform high complexity testing.
 Must complete at least 24 hours of CME per year.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
 Ability to communicate gross descriptions effectively.
 Requires a high degree of care and attention with strict adherence to
defined clinical testing protocols.
 Ability to problem-solve and work independently.
 Demonstrated skills and high level of attention to detail in technical data
interpretation and ability to troubleshoot.
