Job Title: DOT Fleet Mechanic

Job Summary: A DOT Fleet Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of vehicles and equipment within the Department of Transportation's fleet. The mechanic ensures that all vehicles meet safety standards and are in optimal working condition to support the smooth operation of transportation services.

Responsibilities:

  1. Vehicle Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of DOT vehicles to identify and address mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.

  2. Routine Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake inspections to prevent breakdowns and ensure the longevity of the fleet.

  3. Diagnostic Testing: Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify and troubleshoot problems in engines, transmissions, braking systems, and other vehicle components.

  4. Repairs: Perform repairs on faulty or damaged parts, including engine components, suspension systems, and electrical systems. This may involve disassembling and reassembling parts.

  5. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, including dates, parts used, and work performed. This documentation is essential for compliance and future reference.

  6. Parts Ordering: Identify and order necessary replacement parts and ensure that inventory levels are adequate to meet the maintenance needs of the fleet.

  7. Adherence to Safety Standards: Follow safety protocols and standards to ensure a safe working environment. Adhere to DOT regulations and guidelines for vehicle maintenance and repairs.

  8. Collaboration: Coordinate with other mechanics and fleet management personnel to prioritize tasks and ensure the efficient functioning of the entire fleet.

  9. Emergency Repairs: Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide on-site repairs or arrange towing services when necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Formal education or certification in automotive technology or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a mechanic, preferably with expertise in maintaining heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Familiarity with DOT regulations and safety standards.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • Work may be performed in a repair shop or outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, or on-call in case of emergencies.
