Job DescriptionJob Description

Performs and leads wellness/fitness-oriented work designed for the mature adult population in the Metro Richmond, Virginia area. The role travels within an assigned territory and client roster to provide in-home personal training sessions designed to help our older adult client remain healthy, active and independent for life. This may include but is not limited to working with and leading evidence-based senior fitness classes (such as S.A.I.L. - Stay Active & Independent for Life). Assisting and/or leading out in the development and implementation of various fitness and activity-related activities.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Fitness/or exercise-related degree is preferred. 
  • Senior Fitness/Active Aging Specialization is preferred.
  • Current nationally recognized personal training certification. Current CPR/First-Aid/AED certification or completed within 30 days of hire.
  • 1-year experience in some form of personal training required. Preferably two years of hands-on experience working with older adult populations preferred.
  • Ability to follow evidence-based programs and develop, implement, lead, and motivate individuals in fitness-related activities required. Knowledge of chronic diseases, special needs, and health issues concerning older adults is preferred. Basic motivational and fitness/exercise counseling techniques are preferred.  Basic understanding or aptitude regarding technology related to virtual meetings and group activities.
  • Desire to grow in knowledge as it relates to the client population
  • Free and/or low-cost continuing education credits (CEUs) are available after 3 months of employment and minimum client hours trained. 

Primary job responsibilities:

  • Verifies information by facilitating fitness assessments with the client to include interviewing client; reviewing basic medical history, confirming appropriateness of fitness program for the client related to needs and contra-indication of various exercises.
  • Assists client as needed in obtaining medical clearance from their provider, if necessary.
  • Helps clients improve their quality of life by helping them improve their function using appropriate exercise and fitness interventions within the scope of practice of the certification.
  • Creating personalized workout routines to improve muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular health, and/or balance/gait based on the client's goals and assessment outcomes.
  • Collaborates with clients to identify fitness goals and monitor the client’s progress.
  • Provides general nutritional and dietary advice based on USDA, National Institute on Aging, and FDA, to name a few.
  • Identifies a safe and appropriate space inside the client's home for gym equipment usage and instructs clients on the proper use of equipment.
  • Monitors body weight exercise activities to make sure they are performed correctly and provides encouragement, motivation, and improvement feedback.
