The Greater Vallejo Recreation District is a Special Service District that has been serving area residents for over seventy five years. As a Special Service District, GVRD operates as a separate government agency from the City of Vallejo. GVRD manages 407 acres of public park space including 20 neighborhood parks, 10 community parks, 6 special purpose parks, and Olympic-size swimming pool and 4 community centers. GVRD maintains over 1,000 acres of public land.

GVRD is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. With 30 plus full time and approximately 155 part-time and seasonal employees, GVRD operates on a 2022-2023 fiscal year budget of $7.9 million for general fund operations and Measure K funding amounting to $2.2 million. The Measure K funding is being utilized to purchase necessary equipment, improve parks, facilities.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

DEFINITION

Greater Vallejo Recreation District is seeking an Aquatic Programs Specialist to plan, organize, and supervise aquatics programs related to the management and operation of Cunningham Aquatic Complex.

This position will be responsible for teaching and conducting classes offered by the American Red Cross which are listed below.

  1. Lifeguard Training
  2. Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED
  3. Babysitter Training


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Recreation Coordinator.This position does not supervise other part-time employees.

 

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS- Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Plans and coordinates the development, implementation, and execution of sub-programs, special projects, and other initiatives designed to achieve the overall mission, goals, and objectives of the program.
  2. Ensure the pool is prepared for use by the public, including the following:
    1. Prepare water to conform to Board of Health Standards.
    2. Clean filters and grates of all debris.
    3. Inspect public area to insure in sanitary condition.
    4. Inspect all equipment to insure everything is in working condition.
  3. Monitor and inspect facilities and equipment on an ongoing basis for safety and problem areas; perform routine preventative maintenance.
  4. Set up recreation programs and process recreation programs registration, facility rentals and special events using the recreation software system.
  5. Assist with facility audits.
  6. Assist with maintaining inventory; order supplies when needed.
  7. Teach certification classes, such as Lifeguard Training, Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, and Babysitter's Training.
  8. Maintain up-to-date records, prepare required reports in a timely manner.
  9. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Marginal Functions:

  1. Assist with training and re-certifying all part-time employees in Life guarding skills.
  2. Dismiss patrons who are disobeying rules or jeopardizing the safety or pleasure of others and fill out all appropriate forms.
  3. Responsible for keeping the Recreation Coordinator informed of problems or progress of the program and facilities.
  4. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  5. Provide assistance in emergency situations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 


Knowledge of:

  1. Principles and practices of basic First Aid/CPR/AED/Oxygen Administration.
  2. Basic customer services principles.
  3. Basic mathematics practices.


Ability to:

  1. Interact effectively with diverse groups of people and respond to sensitive situations.
  2. Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  3. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  4. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  5. Use recreation software system.
  6. Use software programs such as Word and Publisher to prepare publicity materials.


Experience and Education Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Education:

Graduation from High School or GED


Experience:

At least six (6) months experience as a certified Instructor for American Red Cross.

 

License or Certificate:

Current Lifeguard Training

CPR, AED, First Aid certifications

Lifeguard instructor

First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor


Optional Certificate: 

Lifeguard Instructor Trainer

Ability to complete District provided Title 22 training

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license is desirable.


Minimum age:           18 years old


WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions:

Pool, classroom, and outdoor environment; exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals.

 

Physical Conditions:

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for swimming, running, walking, lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
